    Thanks for speedy reply Rich

I haven't had any changes in diet recently- is it likely to just suddenly happen or can it happen as you up the challenge on your body?

    Smetf

Logically, any significant increase in activity puts the body 'off balance' and it takes a little while for it to adapt to the new demands and gather the nutrients it needs for the job (the appetite is your friend here, it will tell you what you need).

It can certainly happen suddenly, yes!

I hit a state of anaemia after upping the intensity over a few weeks. I was able to perform at or about PB level for week after week until suddenly I hit a brick wall and found even slow paces hard work.

Plenty of liver and broccoli, along with a couple of week's rest, and the body was able to shift oxygen around effciently again.

I'm not saying that you are definitely experiencing the same thing, but it is worth getting it eliminated with a simple blood test......

Wow KMS - very well done there on that massive run and ascents :D

Smetf - hope you feel better soon - I second the blood test - could be vitamin B if not iron as well!

What sort of mileage would you do?
I had a long series of injuries and I found that a lot of high mileage was counter productive because it would increase the chances of a problem. I usually ran about 85 miles per week in winter and about 65 in summer.

I used to do a six week spell of 110 miles per week in the spring to boost my endurance. (This was one of Lindsay Dunn's ideas.) It seemed to work very well for me without causing any problems, other than extreme tiredness! I think a solid base of endurance built through years of steady mileage is the essential foundation for any distance runner, but you shouldn't get too hung up about the numbers. The right mileage varies a lot between different people.

This is an interesting comment because it is a never ending discussion trying to debate whether high mileage/low intensity, low mileage/high intensity or something in between is optimal for marathon runners.

It really does seem to come down to personal preference. The above shows that only 6 weeks per year were in excess of 85 miles for the fastest English marathon runner of all time. I'm pleasantly surprised by that..........

I am doing less mileage (on average but not every week) this build up and I'm finding it fine for me at the moment - I will only increase after the marathon if my progress stops :D
  • and this seems to help back up the idea that overtraining is not necessarily a new idea:

When I was training for marathons, I used to do a 28 mile run about three weeks beforehand. I usually did this by myself to make sure it was run at my pace.

And another useful snippet (I'm going to have to get this book :D):

It has been proved scientifically and empirically that a maximum of two speed sessions per week is better for you than three. People who run three fast sessions a week show great progress at first, but their improvement soon peaks and peters out. People doing no more than two speed sessions a week can show continued progress for years to come.

And it looks like he would enjoy our rants:p:

Do you have any thoughts on how to improve the distance scene in Britain?
I have included a chapter on this in the book because I feel strongly about it. I think it is an enormous social problem, the root of which is the greatly reduced physical activity that children are involved in nowadays compared to previous decades. I see this as a huge problem for the country and not just the sport. Many children are so inactive that their physical development is leading them towards obesity rather than sporting achievement.

I think you have to find what's right for your own situation, training has to be flexible to fit in with work, family life and listening to your own body. I'm sure I could put a lot more into my running but it would be at the expense of my kids, my health (susceptible to colds when I'm tired) and my work. So I'm happy to fit in my runs and make small but steady progress and hopefully everyone else in the house is happy too :D

    Hi All,

Just to let you know I'm still alive, although not finding time to run a whole lot these days...need to build milage rapidly now in order to get round the wokingham half in a couple of weeks.

In other news, also just entered the Saab Solomon Turbo X on March the 7th - gives me something to aim for, at least...
