    Thats Lyth LDWA Challenge

A 8am start with registration opening at 7am meant a early start, 4:45 sad_smiley.gif Twas a tad on the cold side at that time of day and colder still once i started driving over to Kendal. -7 at one point approaching Keswick. A few dodgy patches on the roads where water run off had frozen over, worst one being in Keswick where i had the back slip out a bit.

Got there about 7:30 naturally after leaving later than intended, still at that time of day their is sod all traffic about. Took me 20 minutes longer to get home in fact. Anyway got registered then met Lisrun from Fetch nearer the start time and we ran round togeather, mainly as he did it last year so knew the route wink_smiley.gif

First section is out of Kendal then up hill over a golf course and the main road before heading cross country to the first checkpoint which was 7 miles or so in. Here i merely had one jaffa cake and one piece of malt loaf plus some squash. From here it was a fairly flat for a while before a long climb up onto Whitbarrow Scar. Over the top then down a narrow steep slippy path though the woods to the bottom. naturally i only fell over right at the bottom, literally the last 20 foot of path. This despite slipping most of the way down. As bottom never touched ground i dont class this as a true fall wink_smiley.gif

From here it was through some woods towards the second checkpoint (14 miles) where i was offered hot dog or quiche on arriving. I had neither and settled with 3/4 biscuits plus 3 cups of squash. Never stopped long here as having caught up with Lisrun we were ready for the off again. Next stretch was mostly roads although there was some track too. Over to a hill then up and over the edge, the end of Whitbarrow Scar, then alongside the main road a bit before following back roads to the 3rd checkpoint at 18 miles.

Here it was a couple of biccies and 2 cups of squash before heading off up the hill to get up to Scout Scar. A bit of a long drag upwards and by bottie was a little sore by now. Once up the top however it was a nice jog downhill all the way into Keswick with the last mile and a half on roads. ice pudd and 3 choc mini rolls after finishing too.

Total time for the 23.5 miles was 5:20 plus 12 mins stopped at the 3 checkpoints which isn't to bad. 2600 foot of climb according to Garmin but LDWA say 3000 foot which i suspect is more accurate.

Today the quads ache a little, although the left hip hurts too which is a bit of an annoyance. Bottom is fine though wink_smiley.gif

I was prepared for today to be a rest day but as it turned out it didnt really seem necessary. So went out but kept the tempo steady knowing that the tendons/ligaments would be a little vulnerable after yesterday.

Surprisingly, it turned out to be a comfortable flowing run and very enjoyable ...... so another good sign in relation to how the training is bedding down.:D

    You're a mountain goat, KMS!:D

Malt Loaf, Jaffa Cakes, Hot Dogs...........there arent many races where you run a serious risk of ending the race heavier than when you started!!!:p

Careful with those niggles, it sounds like you worked the muscles hard there...........

What sort of turnout does an event like that get?

Well done kms, I reading a book called 'Feet in the clouds', some of these fell runners are amazing and the history of the races and the runners is really interesting.

Great run again rich, sounds like a nice run.

I never had a hotdog :p Didn't want indigestion is the only reason why though.

About 300 in theory, no idea on actual numbers but i was asked, whilst eating my rice pudd, whether i was under 30 as i'd of placed probably. That just shows for these events the age range is backwards with more oldies than youngsters ;)

Range of people go from fell runners to normal runners to those who'll run wak them right through to walkers only. Not sure what the winner did it in but i'd not be surprised if the walkers where taking 8+ hours. Quite a few set off early as these aren't timed events as such.

    Hi all

Have been lurking but not posting recently. As well as moving, got a new job which is brill for the money saving but not for the marathon training. Been plodding on with the running but last three weeks have been really tough so was hoping for some words of wisdom from you more experienced runners please!

Basically did 6 miles that felt like really hard work- no specific twinges but legs felt rubbish, got home and they felt Ok afterwards but since then every run I have done has been carp ended up having to walk legs were feeling so rubbish. Feels like running through thick treacle :( After 2 weeks of this decided best thing was to have rest week, went out again last night and was the same after 10 mins.??????

Poss reasons- did 10 miles the week before this started in quite heavy snow and calves really felt the slipping and sliding afterwards. Trainers are probably due to be replaced- could it just be lack of cushionning? Is it good to just keep running through pain and hope i get stronger?

I feel a torn as to whether to pull out of VLM given this but also stumped as to how I can get this sorted so i can get back out and running anyway.

    Thanks for reading

    Hi Smetf,

I think all you can do is try to eliminate potential causes one by one.

The description of 'like running in treacle' tends to suggest a problem delivering oxygen to the active muscles. The first thing I would do is to get a blood test done to see if it throws up anything obvious.

Are you iron deficient for example? That is the sort of feeling you would get if you were.

If not iron, it could easily be some other dietary deficiency. Running really does benefit from good nutrition...and lots of it.

The 10 miler in the snow is irrelevant, you will have easily fully recovered from that by now.

I'll see if I can think of any other possibles....

    Thanks for speedy reply Rich

I haven't had any changes in diet recently- is it likely to just suddenly happen or can it happen as you up the challenge on your body?
