Some interesting blogging from Ryan Hall before, during and after the New York Marathon......I didnt think he would be quite so disappointed with the outcome:

Morning all.
Went for another 4mile (actually 4.24) run last night. After half way, I let my stride lenghten a bit, I usually start really slowly, just jogging pace. I did improve my time by a minute, was 49.03, now 48.09, but maybe 2 miles at the 'faster' pace was bit too much and I'll go back to plodding along next time.
I quite like running in the evening in the dark, something nice about it.DEBT FREE OCTOBER 2012!Proud to have dealt with my debts!0 -
Hi all,
As suggested on here I have been increasing my one run a wk by half a mile to build up my mileage slowly.
trouble is I am finding the longer runs really difficult. does this ever get any easier?!

Are you just adding to one of your runs a week not all? One is definitely the way to go.
Its hard because its an adjustment for the body - it does get easier though
Just go as slowly as you need to in order to complete the distance - even if that means walking - if you're really struggling you can run the usual distance and then walk the extra bit and then after a few weeks you should be able to reduce the walking bit til you are running the whole way! If you read back on one of the earlier threads I was having a really hard time getting over 5.25 miles so I dropped back and really mastered 4, then 5 then 6 and then it all seemed to click into place and a few months later I was running 10 miles :cool:
You will get there but be kind to yourself and take your time
E.C. I'm sorry I will do it shortly - give me a slap for being tardy but I just havent felt like it as I've been feeling a bit bluergh0 -

When you think about it, half a mile a week isn't *that* slowly - that's a marathon over the course of a yearIf you're finding it a struggle, drop it to half a mile every two weeks or similar.
FWIW, though, I always find it tough when I do my longest run ever - I think that's natural...you're pushing your body more than you have before...it's not going to find it too easy0 -

Hayley,
The key to getting fitter is to invest consistent effort over a prolonged period of time, by which we mean months and years - sure enough things will get easier as the weeks go by but you wont have even started to get any training effect yet, after all it was only last week that you started to try to increase the distance.
In some ways it will get harder before it gets easier because you will be tiring muscles and tearing muscle fibres that will require repair work.
So be gentle on your body by backing right off and eventually you'll feel like you're getting somewhere.:DGt NW 1/2 Marathon 21/2/2010 (Target=1:22:59) (6:20/mile) 1:22:47 (6:19):j:j

Sorry to see you're still feeling poorly Becky - I've put myself back in the 'under the weather group'. After my fine words last night about running today I had an even worse night and only managed about 3 hrs sleep.
I'm firmly in the dog house with my (usually very patient and understanding) OH who, on seeing my running gear set out, has told me in no uncertain terms that I would be 'stupid' to try running and 'anyone can hear that your chest is bad'. Ooops!!!
So I have decided not to run for the rest of the week and it is very unlikely that I will be participating in the Gosport Half on Sunday.
I know he's right but it doesn't stop me from sulking2021 MFW No.18 £9900/£10,000Mortgage at 21.07.20 £178,999 Mortgage today £150,8910 -
You have my sympathies simply - it feels like I am breathing through gauze at the moment and while I dont feel ill in the normal sense its tres annoying and quite painful...
Hope you feel better soon - and on this one it sounds like OH is right (booo) - we can all sulk together (mine OH's just gone out for a 12 mile run *jealous*)!0 -
Ukevas, I just read about your dad, I'm sorry for your loss. Well done for carrying on and doing your marathon. Huge round of applause to you.
It was my first trip to Greece, I loved it, beautiful - just that, as I sat outside a cafe saying 'the people are so nice' my friend told me the restauranteur was actually saying 'f**k off'! (but I'm sure he was saying it to the pigeons!)
Are you off to Berlin next?0
