What actually is the difference between the two? Any websites where I can look at comparisons?

    ps3.

    1. blu ray player.
    2. runs quieter.
    3. most good games come out on this as well now.
    4. controller not as good but ok.
    5. online gaming is free but apparently less popular.

    360.

    1. quite loud when running although you do get used to it.
    2. better selection of games.
    3. better controller.
    4. online gaming service more popular.
    5. you have to pay to play online.
    6. no blu ray player.
    7. greater risk of becoming faulty due to the well known red ring of death.

there are other differences but those are the main ones in my opinion.
  • ooh goodness, what is all this playing live and subscription and online gaming etc etc then? No, he def won't be doing any of that until he's old enough to sort it out for himself! And no, I'm not bothered about blu ray either so I'm thinking a new Xbox arcade should suffice. I think they're about £150 in Argos so £60 if I use the vouchers. I think that should be OK? Now - games recommendations?? (Don't want much do I? ;))

The Lego games are very good and kiddie friendly - Lego Batman, Lego Indiana Jones, Lego Star Wars, etc. My daughter likes Kung-Fu Panda and Viva Pinata too.

I imagine Blu-Ray would be rather wasted on a 7 year old.

perhaps, i hadnt read the later posts saying how they arent interested in blu ray when i posted. however animated films are supposed to benefit alot from blu ray. so perhaps a 7 year old would love to see their favourite animated films on blu ray.
  • dont do this.

    Care to elaborate?

I assume you are referring to the fact that often people tend to sell their XBox's when they start to go a bit flaky? This is why I suggested buying second hand from a shop so as to ensure there's some sort of cover to the purchase.

The whole point of this discussion is to give the OP advice on what to buy and how so if there is a potential pitfall you want her to avoid then, by all means, let us know. But just posting 'don't do this' without any explanation isn't much help.
  • Well, he loves the Lego games on the Wii - any benefit to having them on the Xbox as well or are they exactly the same? I suppose I could duplicate one of them anyway as he will be able to play this in his bedroom rather than in the lounge.

Perhaps, but if they want to pay twice as much for all their movies, they can get a job and buy them themselves. :p

    Ooh games :j

Unfortunately all my favourites are 18 rated so probably no good here. I would recommend going to a website like ign (type it into google) and go to the XBox 360 section. Under 'reviews' you can list them in score order so that the best rated ones come out on top.

Obviously these reviewers are subjective but it will give you a good idea of which games are worth buying and which are not.

Generally I don't touch any that score lower than 7.5 (75?)

if you buy second hand you dont know what you are getting. you dont know how long they have had it for or how well they have looked after it. there is also the red ring of death problem that would obviously be a bigger risk of happening if you got a second hand 360. even with ps3 they have had problems with the yellow light of death. at the moment though that seems to be only the 60gb versions. you also dont get that good a deal with second hand consoles. for example a new ps3 is £250 and depending were you go you may get some games included. recently on this forum someone bought a second hand ps3 with no games for £165. if you add the price of a couple of games then it comes to pretty much the same as a new one that may have games included.
