f1widow - NO don`t think I`ll ever have too much wool.........maybe not enough lifetime to use it all up - but that`s a different story.

I`ll have to go and `rescue` some pretty pink and bonnie blue wool as I have been informed by DD that she wants a "grandma knitted set" to take babe home in from hospital - and of course those colours are not in my stash darn it. I always do a set of each colour for tinies and the spare set goes to charity. Not venturing far afield just now though, had yet more snow going to and from ASDA shopping today. Never mind BBbrrrrr Jean, it`s ffffffffreezing.

Purpleteddybear - can`t understand how you managed to gain another two inches along the side when you would have been decreasng  but I can well understand your feelings. I would probably have launched the whole lot across the room !!

I did a stripey purple and yellow one last night with the free yarn from the magazine but it kept curling up - so I pressed it lightly and it stretched beyond belief .......it went in the bin this morning as it wasn`t fit for anything else.
Finished one purple square (different wool, left over from DGD`s hat & scarf set) and off to start a yellow one - leftover from Pudsey - might have to do lots of them and sew them altogether - don`t know if they`ll `go` with any other colours :o

Off to do something constructive instead of sitting here all night `blethering`.
    See you later.

I just finished my second square (I was so excited) but the bottom is much bigger than the top! Is there any way to fix it or do I have to unknit the whole thing? :(

My first attempt at an 8 inch crochet square.....part of the pattern was made up by me as the original one made a 7 inch square at best! The colours don't show up too well but from inside out are: blue marl, pink, pale green, lemon, petrol, red, purple, bright yellow (DS balaclava colour!).
Hope this sort of thing is what chalky could use!
psso perhaps your purple and yellow knitted ones would match my multi colour one ?
Might knit one next, although have part of another crochet one done already too, in pastels!

Whoops, it's supposed to be a straight one. I suppose it can be turned into a diagonal one?

Did you end up with the same number of stitches as you started with? Did you use the same needles throughout? I know they're daft questions but I'm a bit puzzled how it can be bigger at the bottom than the top!

Hi everyone. Thanks for all the advice about my back. I have got a wheat bag and that has been well used over the last day or two. The ache has nearly gone but comes back if I sit at the computer for too long - perhaps it's telling me something! Anyway, at least I know it's almost better. We went shopping yesterday for new flooring and other bits and pieces for DH to get on with the renovating, so hopefully he will be well-occupied in the new year. He also has couple of jobs lined up this month for other people - interesting stuff like putting up guttering and so on (yawn!). This is for English people - the French don't seem to go for guttering; our house didn't have any so it was one of the first things we did. Just as well because we've had loads of rain here lately and, for the last two nights, some really spectacular thunderstorms.

Anyway, I've been finishing off DGS's blanket - (it's been on the go for weeks while I've been making other things for pressies). I just have a few more rounds to go but, of course, it's getting bigger with each round. I'm pleased with it, though, and will be posting lots of photos of all the pressies I've made.

I've sorted out some wool for squares and will probably crochet mine because it's easier and quicker to do. Thanks for all the links to patterns. There's loads to choose from.

I would normally start a new thread for the new year but as this thread was only recently re-started, I won't do that this year. What I will do is a new post marking the start of 2010, so watch this space!

I hope you all have a lovely New Year's Eve whatever you do. We haven't decided yet - we were going to have a get-together with friends here but some of them are still away, so we have put that on hold until they all return. DH and I may go into town - we have no idea how the French celebrate the new year. We've had thunderstorms for the last two evenings and it hasn't stopped raining for a couple of days, so we shall probably see what the weather is like before deciding.

Have a good day, everyone. I'll be back with a post to kick-off 2010 later.

Just wanted to drop back in with mk2 of a blanket I've made for another MSE member

It was a washcloth pattern that I've just repeated. I hope this works!
