Hi ladies - well Ive managed three poppies and half a smaller square for LH's challenge today as I thought I had better get their parcel off in the next week or so (and help building a meccano car - oh I think thats a "blue" job I dont get meccano...) I should have been ironing today but hey ....

shezmit - I will have a parcel for you in the next week or two xxx

Ive done a "chalky square" already - its in pale yellow "crinkly wool" - have not a clue of make or type as came to me with no band - but its the biggest ball Ive seen (500g????) - I was actually wondering whether it was 4 ply but I dont think it is.

DH went to Milton Keynes before xmas and saw on the market apparently a huge wool stall with really really really big balls - apparently bigger than my ball - hmmm sounds interesting

Off to finish dinner - catch up soon xxx

sunnygirl - in answer to your question 8" for me is roughly 40 stitches (5 per inch) and in terms of length I knit until it measures 8" - sounds a bit patchy I know but I seem to knit different wools and my tension probably varies as well this sometimes means that give or take a few rows so I dont count - Im wondering if this is right or not now ???? it probably makes it harder for the sewing up having different amounts of rows.

kinsey - how pretty - its lovely - I wish I could crochet xx

Hi guys here's a couple of basic patterns for squares, I'll be posting them on googledocs later once I've confirmed a pattern for a "square in a square", which I'm working on now.

    BASIC DIAGONAL SQUARE – 8”

    Cast on 1 stitch
Next row :- Make the one stitch into two stitches.

Next row :- Knit 1, into the next stitch make another,3 stitches on needle.

Continue to knit, ALWAYS knit the first stitch and into the 2nd stitch make another.

Only increase this way at the BEGINNING of a row

Continue until it measures 8” along the sides

    Knit 1 row plain.

Next row:- Knit 1, Knit 2 together, Knit to end of row.

Continue this way, always knit the 1st stitch then decrease into the next stitch by knitting 2 together until 1 stitch remains.

You should now have a neat square.

    BASIC SQUARE 8”

    DK yarn 4mm Needles

Cast on 40 stitches, knit every row for 80 rows (40 ridges) cast off.

You may need more or less stitches/rows depending on your tension & the yarn you use – don’t worry, measure the width of the piece after about an inch to see if you need to adjust the numbers.

    'bye for now

    luv

I'm confused! I've spent the day knitting a 6" square and now it's 8"? Or is this another challenge?

I made a little basketweave pattern in bright green wool. On to my scarf that has taken about 4 months!

    Me again peeps!

here's the "square in a square" SQUARE IN A SQUARE 8” (Log cabin square) 2 or more colours.

Cast on 20 stitches, knit every row for 40 rows (20 ridges), change colour, knit a further 20 rows (10 ridges), cast off to last stitch – DO NOT BREAK YARN unless you want to change colour again –

Knit into last stitch then pick up and knit 29 stitches along the left side, work 20 rows (10 ridges), cast off to last stitch – DO NOT BREAK YARN unless you want to change colour again –

Knit into last stitch then pick up and knit 29 stitches along the bottom, work 20 rows (10 ridges), cast off to last stitch – DO NOT BREAK YARN unless you want to change colour again –

Knit into last stitch then pick up and knit 39 stitches along the right side, work 20 rows (10 ridges), cast off.

You should now have an 8” square in a square.

The link below should take you to the page posted on googledocs detailing all 3 squares!

MAYTAURUS - naughty to send me a link to CAKES! will have a go at some tomorrow.
PRFUNGI - is that last LOG CABIN square the one I tried and failed miserably at when we were doing PSSO's blankies? If it is I will give in right now. Oh your Mum looks as tho' she had a lovely Christmas, all warm and snuggley in the wrap you made her too, gorgeous colours.
Have tons of wool most of it 4 ply, only one ball of something that looks like DK so I will have a big think about this SQUARE stuff and see what else I can come up with. My union flat squares were done in a 4 ply type of moss stitch on the knitting machine, but I would like to contribute some hand knitted - shall have another rake through the boxes and see what I can come up with.

Chalky Have a good time and enoy your celebrations.

Just popped on to share my delight in finishing the back of the cardigan that I cast on earlier :T I thoroughly enjoyed knitting it too & can't wait to start on the fronts. I always do fronts & sleeves on the same needles, using 2 balls of wool, so I can get the shaping exactly right & they always match in length :D It was a tip that my Mum gave me years ago.

All the talk of slipping the first stitch to keep edges neat reminded me that my Grandma used to say ' Slip the first & knit the last' for the same reason. I don't, personally, but thought others may find it handy.

Have a good evening all 'see' you tomorrow once I've done battle in the supermarket in the morning :rotfl:
