Hi Shaz - try going up a needle size. I find quite a bit of difference across brands of DK & often need to fudge on the go!
Alternatively, try the diagonal square which you simply knit to the required length.

Hi everyone
Chalky - if you're reading this, have a great time!
Thanks to Maytaurus and Pam for all the links and patterns for squares (and other things, including food!). I shall study them all when my back is better - I can't sit at my desk for long at the moment. I shall give my back a few more days then see the doc if it still aches. It's gradually getting better but not as quickly as I'd like. My shoulder hurts, too, which I think is down to the bad back! Luckily, so far it hasn't stopped me knitting or crocheting!
I'm finishing off WIPs this week - I have so many things that need finishing off so I've had to really discipline myself to do them. I just know I'll feel better once they're all done, then I will make the usual resolution not to let them build up! Once they're done, I shall make a start on the dress I'm determined to knit for Summer and, in between, work on some squares for Chalky.
Welcome to Miskool - glad to have you with us; I hope you enjoy it here!
I will call back later but my posts will, mercifully, be short until my back is completely better!
Hope you all have a good day.

Morning all,
Thanks for the patterns everyone.
I decided against the DK knit square last night, and got the crochet hook out. Pleased to say I am nearly finished my first square....it looks quite cool, even if I say so myself, and very colourful. Supposed to be 8 inch but when finished mine looks like it will be a bit under, so am putting an extra round of dcs in just to lengthen it. Will post a pic here once its done.
Hope everyone is ok and enjoy your celebrations chalky.

Hi all, hope you are all well and keeping warm. This `seasonal` weather is getting really boring now.
Thanks to Maytaurus and Pam for the patterns/links. That diagonal square is the same as the Sands blanket pattern isn`t it - it comes up quite quickly and even better - doesn`t need much concentration  ideal for me then.
Roamin` - Jean can you not just double up your 4 ply and use it as DK ?
f1widow - thanks for the square people pattern. I knew chalky had posted it somewhere on here so you`ve saved me trawling through pages and pages to find it. They look so cute I`ll have to have a bash at them. Will you be gathering up your courage and getting DH to take you to MK market to see the big balls for yourself - and maybe rescue some ???
Mioliere - ooh sore back, not good. I find one of those microwaveable wheat bags better than a hottie, doesn`t `wobble` so much. Very gentle ((hug)) for you.
Chalky - have a great time, not too much `falling down water` or vino collapso.
Off to brave ASDA for some bits and pieces - deep joy...not.

afternoon all, kathy hope your back improves soon, i would second elaine's advice, and use a microwave wheat hottie, i use them a lot on my knees when my arthritis is bad.
pam, thanks for advice, and went up to 4.5 mm and got a perfect 8inch sized square.
shaz xenjoy life, we only get one chance at it:)0 -
Elaine, I do the two lots of 4 ply now but I also manage to knit bits with only one strand and then have to rip it all back, so frustrating, I know I have some baby coloured DK so perhaps I will just have a go with that, oh decisions decisions eh!
You keep well wrapped up and warm - my weather says you are having it really cold in the UK. BBBBbbrrrrrrrr!
Mioliere - you could make a "rice bag" same as the wheat bags only with rice- stuff it into the micro for a couple of mins and slap it onto the effected part. I made them for the rellies Christmas a couple of years back and they all appreciated them. Also you could get some of the anrica tablets from the chemists -there is always the Doc option but please don't leave it too long.

Aaargh
I did a diagonal square last night, looks gorgeous. Measured it so one side was 8" long (4mm needles, went up to 68 sts on the diagonal), and then completed the diagonal cast off --- but when it's completed the sides now measure a whopping 10"!!!! Am NOT happy ---
Ho hum,
dawn xx:hello:0 -
Afternoon ladies
psso - well now you come to mention it I wouldnt mind rescuing some super sized balls (although judging by the sort out I had just before xmas I think I might have a little too many rescued balls already)
Question:- Can you ever have enough wool - personally I dont think so ..... Where I have picked it up from charity shop etc or people have given me some - I pretty much have a lot of the same colours so some different colours would be nice.
Im at present knitting some of the face cloth squares started with the heart one and am really enjoying it - maytaurus I think did put the link in recently but just in case
