BIG LA LA MOMENT TIME .....
hi (again!) - Im just knitting squares and have noticed it said that if you slip the first stitch you end up with neater edge - so in "la la" terms what do you have to do???? - I know that slip stitch is pass left to right without knitting it - but when I go back the other way the side seems all baggy & loose - what have I forgotton to do???
Thank you - la la xx
Hi La La,
I do this by instinct but what I think I do is - to slip the first stitch, keep your yarn ready as though to proceed as normal - for a knit stitch, with the Right Hand needle pick up the first stitch on the Left Hand needle, as though you are going to purl it - do not complete the stitch but slip it to the right needle, GIVE THE YARN A TUG then knit/purl the next stitch normally.
For a purl stitch, with the RH needle pick up the first stitch on the LH needle, as though you are going to knit it - do not complete the stitch but slip it to the right needle, GIVE THE YARN A TUG then knit/purl the next stitch normally.
I think that adjusting your working yarn as normal keeps the tension and gives you a neat edge
not sure this helps but I hope it does!
luv

Hi
Taking the Cardiff boy back today. He has work tomorrow, so has to return :-(
I'm being very lazy at the moment and sitting in bed lol.
I did manage to get some knitting done last night. Making good progress on the last slipeer sock, and hopefully if I get some done today, should get them finished :-) Then it's working on a baby blanket, but that will be crochet, and ready to cast on for a new baby cardi, for one of the pregnant church ladies :-) We have one due in February, one in March, and another in April, so it's true. Everything come's in threes. Two boys and one girl apparently :-) lol.
Have a blessed and prosperous knitting day all of you :-)

Good Morning to one and all ---- Have just spent a very happy half hour catching up with all you lovely people. I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas full of lovely things-- especially wool !!
It is lovely to read all about our adventures with so many different things going on. We could almost write a book like Bridget Jones's diary with us all as characters!! I think it would probably be funny, interesting, poignant clever and all the other things that bind us together.
Anyway lets hope we move forward into 2010 with continued love and support for each other and lets also hope life is kind and the sun shines on our faces. Lots of difficult times last year. I have forgotten who it is but a wedding soon!! My turn to sit back!!
Well last night I was in bed by 8.10p.m.!!! All the family left by about 2.00 and I was just making the soup when the doorbell went and a dear little family arrived.Three of the sock monkeys went happily to a new home.We are kind of honorary Grandparents to lots of our childrens friends children and the sock monkeys have been such a success.I shall miss them now!!
Our Christmas was lovely but so hectic. Buster certainly had a wonderful time but a six month old puppy and 10 others certainly kept me and DOH on the go. I gave them their poem about their home made gifts but they loved them all especially the crochet fingerless gloves so I was really pleased
So now its the big Tidy and then a bit of a rest. Lots of walking and no more calories!!
I did manage to knit a few squares. Am I the only one who watches films like the Pirates of the Caribean and really doesn't have a clue what is going on? --- Keira Knightley is pretty though!!
So I will pop back in later but we have a walk to DSIL'S for lunch. We miss the Sunshine Bus which is spending Christmas in Spain but its amazing how you can manage if you have to.
Lots of welcomes to the new members and lots of love to you all.Try and do a good deed every day.0 -
morning all, love the pics of your mum in her shawls pam
orkney star, your lad looks lovely in his new balaclava,
i'm having la-la moment here, cant do the loopy stitch, i'm not good at following instructions, prefer to be shown, so i think i'll have to wait til one of my craft groups begins in the new year.
sounds like you all had lovely xmas's, mine didnt go as i'd planned, me and bf split up by text on xmas day, going to meet him for a coffee today, to talk, so will see what happens there. on the positive side, since xmas, i've knitted 3 blankets, had to do something to keep my mind busy.
taking kids shopping this morning, to spend there xmas money, so i best get ready,
have a good day all
hugs
shaz xenjoy life, we only get one chance at it:)0 -
Oh Shaz, you poor girl, I hope the meeting goes well. Christmas is always a stressful time so maybe now it's over you'll both be feeling you've made a mistake and can put it right, I do hope so.0

Good morning all. VERY late for me today. I overslept and half the day has just disappeared on me. I also have a bit of back ache which is irritating me because it's difficult to get comfy. Anyway, I'm sure I'll be able to knit or crochet this afternoon.
Pam - your mum looks so lovely. I loved the photos.
It was great to see Orkney Star's LO in his balaclava. I remember making those for my boys when they were small, knowing that they were well protected from the cold.
I've been knitting the dress I want to make for Summer and mis-read the pattern. For one, I can't get the print very big so I have to squint at it, plus it told me to 'continue working the last two rows until work measures 8.25 inches, so I did, then the next line said 'at the same time, work the decrease rows', which I didn't! So, I just know will have to unpick it and, because it's knitting which hurts my hands more than crochet, I just can't face doing it all again - it's giving me eye strain and achey hands, so I think it's not meant to be!
Chalky - I watched Pirates. I think the trouble is that films are made for cinema and the sound is never right for the TV. DH gets cross because there's always music blaring away when the characters are speaking, so you miss half the dialogue! I have to watch films with ships in them from behind my knitting - I have a phobia about them (have no idea where that comes from; my sister thinks I went down with the Titanic in a former life!). I can get on a boat (which is just as well when I think of all the ferries I've been on!) as long as I don't look at it beforehand. It doesn't matter whether it's galleons or modern ships - they scare the bejeebies out of me! Pirates is worth it simply for the way Johnny Depp plays Jack Sparrow - I find it mesmerising!
Love your sock monkeys, by the way!
I hope everyone who had to work hard preparing their Christmas has found time to relax after all the effort. I had a lazy time of it and I still feel tired! I also have to face wrapping up the pressies we'll be taking to the UK in the new year - it will feel a bit strange wrapping up in January!
One of the best pressies we had was a calendar with photos of Summer for every month - it was such a surprise when it arrived through the post that it made me sob, as did the two lovely cards DGS and DGD1 made. I can't wait to see them all again.
Anyway, I have to tidy up my wool corner, decide on a different dress to make for Summer, then I'll catch up on the posts I've missed on here.
Hope you are all keeping warm - it's cool and wet here.

Chalky it's me who has a wedding to go to on the 8th January, DS2, they were planning on May but found out about new baby on the way, in June, so brought it forward. They're the ones with three year old daughter, who is priceless. I'll have to whip off big overcoat for photos!0

morning lovelies! You must give advance notice of next cardiff visit Ann and we'll meet for a coffee! Beautiful sunny day here but like miol had a lovely lie in (no guilt here!) and got out of bed at 10.15! Desperate wool hunt for the wool that is needed for rest of my jumper...john lewis ringing back - they have it for £2+ instead of the usual 5 so worth a hunt!! Am knitting a basket from one of the patterns in my mag! Going to allotment later for a clean up - its beautiful and sunny here so a great day for it plus the gin has given me a headache so that should clear the cobwebbs!
