Donny - your trip sounds fantastic, I would love to be able to take off and see some sunshine - one day! I shall now keep an eye out for the next ryanair sale and see if I can get tickets to visit Pau, sounds lovely (also thanks to whoever else posted - used to live there?) I think the fairy cake thing is fairly new, seemed to start between dd1 and dd2 at school, baking cakes yourself is a novelty though, most people just send their kids in with a multi pack of mini mars bars or whatever - surprise suprise, my lot like fairy cakes that have been decorated, sigh!

Redruby - thanks for the info, will try that with my vodka, planning to start it off this weekend.

Bitsy - happy birthday to Master Bitsy, I hope he has a lovely day, and enjoy your dinner out.

Thrifty - I like the sound of the fridge choritzo, is it straightforward? I think I am going to have to give in and order the book!

Sunnyday - my slicer isn't too bad to clean, it all comes apart fairly easily, but being a clutz I do have to watch out with the blade! I reckon it saves me a fortune, not to mention stops me yelling and stomping around in the morning cos I can't cut my hm bread straight with a knife!

Clare - still thinking of you all xx

Right, best get a shift on, just looked in mirror and looking a little scary, hopefully shower will rectify the hair, not entirely sure what will improve the watery eyes and red hooter though!

.....I love my job as I enjoy being with the kids and playing with them etc. BUT its the planning side I am not so hot on. Had no formal training in this area and feel that its going to let me down

I think if you are honest they may be more accepting of any lack of formal training - after all, you've only been registered for a short while. Is this a start-up visit or a formal inspection?

Re planning, do you have a National Childminders Association contact? Or maybe there is someone in Children's Services at your local council who could help you with planning?

Thriftlady - how sad for your DD that her 'friend' finds what sounds like a wonderful packed lunch disgusting. Perhaps the friend is not used to proper food!
Exactly what I said to Dd;)

Mummysaver the chorizo is really easy. It isn't sausage it's simply a mixture of minced pork, spices, garlic, salt and red wine.

Tupperware Mexican Chorizo from River Cottage Everyday by Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall

To make it you need 750g minced pork.
Put it in a bowl with
    1 tbsp sweet smoked paprika
2 tsp of hot smoked paprika
    1½ tsp fennel seeds
    2 tsp salt
    2 crushed garlic cloves
    ¼ tsp cayenne pepper
    50 ml of red wine
    Black pepper
Squelch together with your hands then fry a tiny bit in a bit of oil to check the seasoning. Mine tasted a bit salty but the book says the flavours will mature -we'll see. I'm not sure about altering the salt content as it might affect how long it will keep for. You need to leave it 24 hour before using. It will keep for 2 weeks.

I found it difficult to find hot smoked paprika (pimenton). I could only find the sweet sort. I eventually tracked some down at Seasoned Pioneers from whom I have bought spices before. They are very good- fast delivery. I stocked up on it as I think I will use it a lot.

For the wine I used one of those little 250ml bottles. I decanted the remaining 200 ml into 4 little tubs so that I have it available for future chorizo. Hard to believe I know -it would have been so easy to drink the rest!

You can make it into meatballs, little burgers or fry it till crisp and use in salads, egg dishes or pasta. Hash sounds good to me.
  • Yesterday I did too much and was wiped out by bedtime. It's amazing how long an anaesthetic lasts in your system isn't it? I had an hours walk around town, baked some fairy cakes and then went to work to say hello to everyone - hardly running a marathon!

This morning I'm planning on nothing more taking than having a soaky bath then this afternoon I'll tidy around and possible do some washing. If I get time I'll make some cards too as I got some great bits from the charity shops yesterday. Tonight I'm off to see Cliff Richard and the Shadows with my mum as her birthday treat so not too MS there but we are eating before we go and getting lifts there and back so it'll just be wine we'll be spending on  Hopefully lots of dancing will cancel out the calorific effect of the alcohol :j

Breakfast I've missed today as I've only just woken up and have things to do online before I get out of bed otherwise I won't do them. Lunch will be HM bread with something from the fridge and dinner will be HM pizza I think.

I'm on a hunt to find a bra with only one cup - does anyone know if they exist? I'm not yet sure if I want a reconstruction and I don't always want to wear a false one either but do need the support for the other one.

John Barrowman is doing an appearance in West London today.Just thought I'd mention it as I know we have a few fans on there. I was hoping to go but really can't afford the bus fare as it is quite some distance. Plus I have a cd that I wanted signed but sometimes if they are book signings they insist you buy the book and as much as I loved the other one, I really can't afford a hardback at about £20 or so.. :(

Gonna stay at home and give the cd a spin :D

Thanks for the chorizo thingy Thrift. It is kinda hard to find it round here so might have a go at making my own. pork mince is always cheap at Sainsburys

  • Bitsy - when I did childminding the local college ran courses about it, it was just as they started to introduce loads of paperwork, so really helpful, also did my first aid certs this way too. NCA are usually really helpful with info too. I always found it best to ask the inspectors' advice if I needed it, they are great at pointing you in the right direction as well.

Thrifty - thank you so much, I am going to try that this weekend, I assume that it basically just tastes like choritzo but without the texture? It'll be great for the econ gast recipe for choritzo and meatballs if so, as I can just make extra meatballs! Now you really need to stop posting about cookbooks else I shall be destitute lol! If you haven't got the econ gast one though I can really recommend it, everything I've tried has been really good - mostly it's the sort of food we all eat anyway, just with some new ideas. And thanks for the linky, will check them out, any spices out of the ordinary are really hard to find around here for some reason.

My kids have had some comments about their lunches in the past, pasta salad caused huge amounts of comments, until the friends asked to try it too, then there seemed to be a phase of everyone eating pasta salad at lunchtimes! My ds has found that he can make big profits on hm stuff, and can often be found knocking up a few pasties out of leftovers, or removing a few cakes to flog to his mates! I'm sure I've mentioned before that he made people pay a refundable deposit once I started using silicone baking cases, mainly cos I'd threatened him with immediate death if my cases weren't returned to me!

Spiders beware, I'm on my way now!
