when he selects neutral and lifts the clutch pedal his engine will stop, when he presses the clutch pedal the engine should restart. what if it doesnt? you need to be able to get round him easily.
it will happen, possibly quite often with all that extra starting it will be doing. abattery could be knackered and the driver just finds out at the lights when it wont restart.
You can't make excuses for engine/electrical failures in new cars but generally they are more reliable than older cars.0 -
I love my Yaris and the stop-start. I was pleasantly surprised at how seamless it is and easy to get used to. It only kicks in when the conditions are right, so if the AC is on, or the battery is low it won't stop. It starts with the slightest touch on the clutch and doesn't slow me down at all.0

As posted before they have much bigger batteries, and the starter is "pre engaged" so its not like when you start a normal car.0

Which is good for the environment. However, surely starting the engine uses more fuel than it would if it was just left running. Also, what sort of hammering is the battery taking all the time? Specially if the lights are left on...?
I dont want any Stop/Start tech in a car of mine, and wouldnt consider it at all unless it can be permanently disabled, I couldn't give a fig about the fuel economy.0 -
I'm perplexed by the negative attitude some are showing regarding this Stop-Start technology that they have never even tried in a car jumping to conclusions about reliability and extra weight that are simply unfounded.
Why should the battery be bigger and heavier?
It isn't, possibly it will have a shorter service life due to working harder but then your saving some cost in fuel so a worth while trade off. Electric motors can be run continueously for long periods so why should starting the engine more frequently wear it out?
I don't think it does but we would have to ask the engineers who design and test these systems to fidn out for sure, anything else is speculation.
For what it is worth you can disable the Stop-Start feature on a Mini though I think you might have to do it each time you start the car. Why you would want to disable something that saves fuel and has no impact what-so-ever on your driving of the vehicle is beyond me.0 -
I've found the stop start thing to be fantastic. After a few days, you don't even notice it working. I thought I would find it annoying in traffic jams where you shift forward every 10s or so, but it is a really good feature.0

Will have to test drive a couple and get back to you on that, cant imagine its going to assist with the traffic light grand prix though.
I don't want tech interfering with my driving, and as mentioned many times on this thread, saving the odd pence in fuel really doesn't interest me one bit.0 -

Agree it doesn't save much in fuel, but does help with fumes etc.
However, could be useful in situations like below...
