believe it or not I am not after compensation as I didn't actually swallow it, otherwise I would obvioulsy. I am thinking of the next person who may injure themselves due to poor standards. Yes I wrote a silly heading (not on purpose) but I am heavily pregnant and the shock of almost swallowing a metal screw scared me!

So what exactly is your intention by 'complaining to a higher means'?

Do you want to get the restaurant closed down?

Do you think a reprimand from 'a higher means' will have more impact than your complaint?

You say the restaurant offered a replacement meal there and then or a free meal at another time - were they very apologetic about the incident?

Just noticed this in your post:

So - you're not after compensation because you found the screw in your curry but you didn't swallow it.
But - if you HAD swallowed the screw, you would have been after compensation?

  • yes they were slightly, but it may have overlooked it and not taken it seriously. If they were to have an inspection, I feel my complaint would be taken more seriously. I am not talking about a hair in my food, but a metal screw.

I am not looking to shut anyone down, and if this is a first incident for them, then I doubt they would be and will look more closely at their equiptment. If it is not their first incident, then great, I have done my bit.

Yes if I had swallowed it, it would have caused great damage and would have been more recentful than I am now.

  • Can you post a pic of it?
I ask because when I make rice I add a couple of cloves and they could be mistaken for little rusty screws.

As mentioned, inform your local environmental health department at the council. Hopefully you still have the screw as evidence, but it's not critical.

As you've correctly stated, if it's a first time, then the council can make a note of it and pop around to have a friendly word. If it's another incident in a long line of breaches of regulations then it might just be the final straw that the council needs to break the camel's back.

(I'm sure you can excuse everyone's incredulation at finding a poster on here who's reporting something out of concern for others, rather than their own ends. Such a concept is unheard of in the social circles they move in....:D)

Fair point, volcano - except the OP has stated that she WOULD have been after compensation if she'd swallowed the screw.

Of course I would, but I didn't. So that is not the topic in hand. You asked me a question in retrospect.

Anyway I have emailed Surrey council based on this part of the website:

    Foreign body complaint
Finding a foreign body in food bought from a retail outlet or in a meal at a restaurant can be an unpleasant experience. This type of complaint could include nuts and bolts, metal washer, hair, mouldy food, insects, etc.

Surely most people would give some thought to whether they were entitled to compensation, under those circumstances. It sounds pretty dangerous to me. My opinion -- if she had swallowed the screw, she should definitely have sued. The fear of being justifiably sued is one of the factors that helps make restaurant owners in general rather careful about not dropping metal objects in the food they are selling.

If you take away (get it?!) all the jokes, i think the OP has a genuine complaint. I'd be horrified if i found a chunk of metal in my meal!!

I certainly wouldn't take the free meal, i'd take the refund and i certainly wouldn't order from there again. I'd follow this up with a letter to Environmental Health too.
