  • Just read about SayNoTo08870 and will use in future.

Previously to avoid charges for one company I used to phone the automatic payment line that was a free number enter an invalid account number a few times and then get put though to the call centre for free :)
  • Make sure that this company's details are listed on the 'Say no ..' website.
Thank you for reading this message.

Upon checking my daughters mobile bill last week I noticed calls to three numbers had cost (me) £3. For very short calls this is a scandalous amount of money! The worst one was to HMRC and after using the "Say No" site to get a geographic number I called them to check it out and to complain. They pointed out that, although the geo number I'd found did work currently, they are changing their numbers to a common 0845 one and they don't think that I will be able to contact them on a geo number in the future. I'll have to wait and see on that one.

On a brighter front, I have just been reading some literature from my bank, Lloyds TSB, and I'm delighted to see that below their 08458 50 53 00 platinum account number they have added this note - "If you would rather not use an 0845 number call 01733 347 245 instead". This is the first time I have seen this and I'm delighted. Hopefully other companies will take note and follow suit!

It's almost enough to make me want to transfer my accounts :D

    Truly an encouraging sign.

They have individual 0845 numbers (which are included in my BT Unlimited Weekend calls plan).

There are dozens of 01 numbers on there. Which branch are you after?
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

That's not listed - but the 46 New Conduit Street store (01553 763471) might be able to tell you.

... there are times when I could not get alternative 0870 or 0845 numbers, and - for the sake of speed - I could not take the 'write a letter' route, so I HAD to pay the ridiculously-high charges.

However, we have a Virgin Media 'phone/tv/broadband package, and were contacted last week to see if we wanted an 'add on' which would give us 250 minutes per month of 0870 (but not 0871) and 0845 (but not 0844) telephone numbers, for a monthly cost of £2.

The contract can be cancelled at any time, with immediate effect (or so I was told). Consequently we signed up yesterday, and after 'phoning HMRC + another 0845 number, I have already 'saved' almost a month's subscription.

I now need to sit down and work out whether or not it makes (financial) sense to continue with the contract, but I have another few weeks in which to do so.

    HTH someone :)
    If it's cheap, I'm cheerful!
