Whilst sympathetic to your plight I think it's a bit rich to say that BT is fiddling with local area codes. Surely, the last code change was years ago. Reprinting stationery and updating signage for a small business is not that expensive.

BT does not "fiddle" with area codes. This is now Ofcom's responsibility.
