Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0

I THINK I saw somewhere that a new sort of number prefix 03 was going to be introduced instead of 0845, 0870 etc. Next year????
Anyone else saw that or was I dreaming?0 -

I was reading an article in the Sunday Telegraph today that indicated that coming in 2008 Ofcom is advising all banks, and institutions to move away from 0845, 0870 numbers to numbers starting with 02 and 03. This will make all calls equal to other geographic calls. Sorry I can't find the article online to post it.0

There are new numbers coming that start 03 and will (hopefully) be charged at the same rate as a call to a geographical (01/02) number, but they won't relate to any particular location. They will be non-geographical, similar in nature to 0845/0870 which allow companies to route the same number to different locations at the drop of a hat, but won't cost as much.teddyco wrote:I was reading an article in the Sunday Telegraph today that indicated that coming in 2008 Ofcom is advising all banks, and institutions to move away from 0845, 0870 numbers to numbers starting with 02 and 03. These numbers are to be provided to telephone companies within the next few weeks, so hopefully organisations will start to adopt them this year.0 -

I second that - a mention in the weekly email could really boost the number of signatures (now at 18,691)0 -
Yes - there are (at least) 5 threads about this now.
But it needs all the publicity we can get.
18,699 signatures to date - lots more are needed before the media catch on to this. Once they do, I'm sure the number signing will increase dramatically (with nearly 4000 petitions open at the moment, an individual one can be hard to find).0 -
What I find truly appalling is that the Jobcentre Plus Benefits Centre use 0845 numbers. These telephone numbers are nearly always engaged. However, the caller is always charged for the call because you have to go through a menu system before you find out that the line is engaged. The people who have to call the Benefits office are often in desperate need and on very low income. I know someone who needed urgent help and called 50 times throughout one day and the phone was engaged every time! :mad:0

There have been a couple of requests for the income support office at Jobcentre offices. Feedback given from other members on Saynoto0870 shows that you can be put through by ringing the switchboard at the relevant Jobcentre.jat100 wrote:What I find truly appalling is that the Jobcentre Plus Benefits Centre use 0845 numbers. ...
