Elle, the HV came to see us re weaning last week. She said i should be starting now ( or as she said, should have already started ) I said i thought the guidelines has changed to 6 months? She said they should be taking lumps by 6 months to help with speach development.
Anyway, I gave rose a small taste of carrot and butternut squash and also porridge. She seems to have loved it but im aware of trying to not overload her.

Also, HV also said she should be taking 3 meals a day plus all of her milk she is currently taking up to 1 year old...that seems an awful lot to me. Surely the milk should get less and less as her food intake increases? Its so long since i had this with my other two that i cant remember x
Many health visitors disagreed when the government changed the advice so they carried on giving the old advice. Official UK advice is six months and no earlier or later. This was supposedly changed to fit with the changed WHO guidelines but the WHO guidelines are more flexible. WHO say six months with the proviso that some babies may need to be weaned earlier but should never be before four months (17 weeks). They changed it to that from 4-6 months and suggested that governments word their own advice appropriately to how people will understand it. AAP say "about" six months but that babies vary so it could be anywhere from as early as four to as late as nine months.

In terms of milk quantity, it is important easpecially when early (before six months) weaning that the solids are in addition to the milk rather than in place of the milk so that might be what the HV was meaning with the quantity of milk. Milk does count if it is in food though so if you give yoghurts and other milk puddings then they are providing "milk nutrition" IKSWIM.

  • weezl, honey, darling weezl :) Could you possibly do a little bit of research for me when or if you get a minute :) Can you check the likelihood of re-occurrence of CIN 3 cells after removal and also the risk of cancer ??

I am off to Asda just now but will be back later :)

My HV just said give them whatever you're having (except no sugar, salt, nuts or honey before 12 months) except if it's before six months you can only give them fruit, veg and baby rice. There does seem to be rather an obsession generally with iron. I know with breastfed babies it's partly a throwback to when they didn't know that the iron in breastmilk has a high bioavailability relative to other sources but other than that I don't know why it's been singled out for such emphasis.

DS2 was 7 weeks early so on iron till a year old then we were advised to keep him on follow on milk for the higher iron content till 2 years! He was ff from 2 weeks old.

Oh yeah Elle, my cousin has great weaning spoons that will be perfect for Rhys, the spoon end has a point and is nice and small for tiny mouths. Now to find out where they are from...

I think people need to stop worrying about weaning so quickly, when they are ready they are ready. I worried too much with Elliot being a 1st time mom, wish i'd just followed his lead as he had lumps etc when he was ready not when the HV said he should be :) All babies are different, not all are ready for big lumps at 6 months.

How are Elliot and your DH now, keely? :)

I can't see Rhys being "ready" for weaning from a 'watching us eat' sense any time soon. He is taking more milk that normal babies would need but only just taking all we're supposed to give him - not screaming for more, although not feeding at even time intervals either so sometimes just hungrier than others. I think the only "ready" thing he meets is the ability to hold his head up well!

Dylan is 15 weeks and no where near ready to be weaned, whereas Jasmine was already eating a meal a day at this stage on doctors advise as she was taking 5 x 9oz bottles and still wanting more !!!

I think our HV said that when weaned, they should still have a pint of milk during the day.

At the moment, at almost 8 months, we're on:-

    Boobie feed
    Breakfast
    Mid morning 6oz milk
    Dinner
    Mid afternoon 6oz milk
    Tea
    Bedtime boobie.

The most milk she'll drink at once is 6oz, so I guess the boobie feeds are a similar amount?

    So if she's having 4 X 6oz - does that equal a pint?

    mm,

This study is very positive, suggesting that for CIN 3 lesions the treatment effect is almost 100% ie of non-development of an invasive cancer. ( ie it does appear to prevent the development of an invasive cancer) It also says that treatment of CIN 3 has a greater success than CIN 1 and 2 for cancer prevention. The first 11 years after treatment is the most risky.

    HTH,

    Will keep looking :)

Nearly had heart failure when I read that, thinking I wasn't keeping up my milk supply to that level _pale_ However, then I remembered a pint is 568ml so yes I am *phew* Rhys is on 612ml a day.

    6oz is 170ml so 4x170=680ml :)
