If you want a decent quality kitchen, get Wickes; if you want a cheaper, lower quality kitchen, get Ikea or Howdens, if you want nothing but stress, headaches, a divorce and possibly life in prison for manslaughter, get one from B&Q
Look around online for appliances, all the sheds tend to have over inflated prices.
Make sure you get a good quality sink and tap, again buy it online.
Also make sure you buy decent quality Worktops (Duropal/Axiom/Bushboard/Wilsonart)If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands

I have to thoroughly recommend B & Q. We had a lovely kitchen put in for £5000 on interest free credit over 5 yrs it is gorgeous and we were so lucky even though we paid B & Q for fitting they used local fitters in to do the job who were fantastic.Perhaps we were just lucky I don't know.xXx-Sukysue-xXx0

we used a bespoke kitchen maker johncooperkitchens.co.uk Gave them a budget for EVERYTHING and they came back with a quote of £300 over, but I was able to source our own applicances and they fitted them not a problem which brought the price back down to budget. and it is all bespoke/hand made/solid and same price we were quoted from homebase & trade depot.0

Thanks so much for all the replies. Will need to haggle, since recieving an evil car bill for over £1000. Don't think even Martin could haggle down that much! Working on bare min budget now...new kitchen will be mine! Time to ebay hubby & the kids...any takers?! Ok maybe not hubby, need him to fit it!November wins...a book, a designer handbag (worth £550 :T) and a game. I am now an addict and thank everyone for taking the time to share and post.0

Rubbish, if you want quality, get an ikea one, they come with 25 year warranty. You can't argue with that.
Everyone we asked told us to try wickes/bq/mfi/howdens etc etc then go to Ikea.
They were right. Good quality and no hassle if you get any problems.0 -

And how a kitchen that doesn't even come with a service gap can be described as quality, is beyond me...they are cheap for a reason...
They are OK quality (barely better than B&Q) and I know plenty of people who have had nothing but hassle with their Ikea kitchen...If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands

German? Ha ha ha ha ha
If you buy from Kutchenhaus, you are basically buying an MFI kitchen. The only reason they are "german" is that Nobilia (not to be confused with Nobia, who are a very good company) bought the company who supplied MFI.
They are NOT to be compared to proper German kitchen manufacturers like RWK, Poggenpohl, Miele, Hacker etc etc...Never let your sucesses go to your head and never let your failures go to your heart.:beer:0 -
I got a Homebase Buckingham kitchen a year ago it's the most expensive one they do and I have a large kitchen we paid £5k for just the units no worktops or fitting, that should give you an idea of Homebase prices. I got the worktops from here www.real-wood-flooring.com they are 1/4 of the price of the DIY stores for solid wood worktops. I am very pleased with the kitchen and the worktops quality is good and had no probs.
Things really add up though once you factor in the plasterer, kitchen fitter, plumber if moving the sink, wall and floor tiles, endless tubs of tile adhesive, appliances, new table and chairs, new accessories you get a shock when you add it up.
Final tip is to get a good fitter, if it's fitted badly it will make it look cheap even if you spent a fortune.AKA: PC

In no way shape or form is my kitchen an MFI kitchen. The quality of the units is obvious and the independant kitchen fitter I used to fit it was very impressed with the quality. The units are rigid pre-built units from their German factory. You seem to have something against them as you comment negatively when anyone posts a positive comment about them - do you have a particular axe to grind?
Nope, no axe to grind. But if you look at the quality of their kitchens and then look at RWK, Poggenpohl etc. you will see a massive difference in both build quality and the materials being used.
The carcases are EXACTLY the same as what MFI sold, but they have got better fascias and internals...If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands

Wickes, definitely. Got quite a sizeable oak kitchen , solid oak tops, half price washing machine and free under worktop DVD/TV for uner £3,000. Love it.0
