Just picked up a silver one from Tesco in Stevenage yesterday afternoon for £84.97. Didn't know it was a silver one until I got it home because it was in a purple box.

Unfortunately I didn't ask if there were any more in stock so I would suggest a call before trying. Typical newbie moneysaver! :o

  • Taaa-daa. Got one. Thanks guys - I was looking for an MP3 player for wife's birthday!

Had to go to the Borehamwood branch. Paid £85 for the purple box one only to be told that they did not have these in stock and that a refund was all they would offer. Kicked up a fuss and told them that they should not have produce on display that was not for sale amd eventually the store manager came over and let me have the black one for that price.

Pssssst....they've still got two on the shelves.

To the people who have got wound up by me buying 9, i just wonder why you are all so wound up? I thought this site was about saving money and it costs me a fortune sometimes. I normally just buy a few extra (I am keeping 3) to try and make a little bit extra to pay towards mine!
I would understand if I were going to ebay the lot and make loads but i haven't.. I may put a couple on there but offer friends first. Oh and in response to the person who said i can't think much of my friends, I sold one today to a mate who wouldn't be able to afford one (even at £99.97) and therefore I am letting him have it for £120 @ £20 per week. He's happy coz he's got it on a buy now, pay later (something which not a single bank in this country would let him do as he has no credit rating) and i'm happy coz one of mine has now cost £79.94.
To the people who have said nice things to me, thank you. I have not come on here to cause any offence and am shocked at the responses to my post..... Just thought Money Saving/ Making was what this website was about!
By the way, the other thing is that sometimes these are price errors which are rectified quickly so you have to get in quick!

Would you be interested in selling one of these?
  • Hello fine forum fellows,

I feel compelled to join your community today after taking advantage of this fine offer.

I bought one of these 20Gb beauties yesterday in Tesco Metro outside Liverpool Street station for £84.97 and better still, it was a black one. Result!:rotfl:

The have got a number of the dvd cases for the purple ones on display. The trick, as I learned the other day, is to take one without a sticker covering up the barcode to the checkout. When I tried last week the cashier was forced to call a supervisor when she encountered the sticker and was told "don't scan the bar code on that - If you do the price will come out wrong. They are all £200 now and we won't be getting any more cheap ones in".

After missing a bus yesterday (sorry for the life story!) I tried again on the off-chance and found one without a sticker which scanned at £85. They got one from the stock room for me (so I don't know how many they have left) which turned out to be black. I was out of there clutching my blue and white plastic bag quicker than you can say "hooray - I got one over on you chumps" and best of all, guilt free, after all they scanned at £85.

Another tip for anyone lucky enough to grab one of these is to google the "volume hack" for this device and follow the steps to remove the volume limiter and make the thing sound much better. I could post the link here but I'm not sure if I'm allowed to.

So, thanks a million to anyone who contibuted to this thread.

No problem posting the link, but people please note that the volume limiter is there for a reason - you can very easily expose yourselves to very high volume levels from MP3 players without noticing it, and you're really not going to be happy going prematurely deaf.

The volume hack not only removes volume restriction, but improves sound quality because of the way the unit limits the SPL (sound pressure level)

In simple terms, hack the unit then audition at the same "level" as before, is will sound better... trust me!

Can you provide a reference to this please? Sounds a bit like pseudo-scientific gobbledygook from a hifi mag but I am willing to be convinced otherwise!

Also, how do you know that the volume level (at a given displayed setting) does not remain the same afterwards as it was before applying the hack?

If you are happy with how this thing sounds, I'd strongly recommend leaving it as it is. Your ears are more precious than some supposed increase in sound quality which you aren't missing anyway.
