I am really intregued by mooncups - I'd always thought of them as rather icky somehow. I am now inspired! Do they only come in one make? Where can you buy them? (sorry if this is covered elsewhere in this thread... I haven't read it all)

There are a lot of different makes. At least a dozen, I think. They all have their pros and cons. I tried Mooncup first, but I don't really like it. I have a Meluna now (German) and I love it. The best place to find out about menstrual cups is this community of cup users:
    http://community.livejournal.com/menstrual_cups/

What they don't know about cups isn't worth knowing. Have a read of the FAQ's before posting (or even joining), pretty much everything you need to know is in there.

A question for fellow mooncup users...

I had a coil (IUD, not Mirena) fitted this lunchtime. I was told to expect spotting over the next couple of days and then "normal" periods.

I was told to use pads/liners rather than tampons for the immediate spotting, but entirely forgot (oh the pain etc!) to ask whether mooncups would be OK? I'm currently running down my stock of T***o Value panty liners with old knickers :o but don't like tampons at all and don't want to go back to pads.

So...does anyone have any idea re this, or should I just give NHS Direct a ring tomorrow?
We may not have it all together, but together we have it all

when they say tampon, i think its because they dont want anything internal to be used

however its always best to ask a professional, but you may find they dont even know what you are talking about, concerning mooncup, so will prob just treat it the same as a normal tampon

i know when DD had thrush (when wearing cloth nappies) i asked the nurse what to do about her nappies, and she just said throw them away - i was like 'hello they arent disposables', to which she didnt have any reply, as she didnt know how to treat a thrush infected nappy

I'm actually managing OK with liners. I've worked out that a liner changed every couple of hours (although isn't very environmentally friendly) is actually cheaper than pads - I can cope with "value" liners but have to have expensive pads. If a box of 30 lasts me 4 days (going on today's usage), then that's only 6p a day.

I've got a GP appointment next week anyway, so will ask the doctor there. She's quite "environmentally aware"

I had to revive this thread, I got caught at work without my mooncup today and had to use tampons that have been in my drawer forever! I've had a mooncup for a good few years and never more than a small twinge of period pain in that time. The period pains I've had today nearly crippled me, walking home I was nearly sick! I've heard before there are links between a lessening of pain with the mooncup and its counterparts and I now beleive it to be true (or a really bizarre coincidence I guess) and will never be caught without mine again!

I used to swear by my mooncup! It was great. However, I went on the contraceptive implant last March, and after recently having it taken out, I've only just started my time of the month again. Maybe it's tmi, but I'm having problems getting the mooncup in :( it seems really tight, and hurts.

I hate using pads and tampons though. Very annoying.

im sure the mooncup info said it should last 10yrs, does that mean its not ok to use after 10yrs, as i must be approaching that?

  • I'm 32, had three children via c-section, my first was a failed vaginal delivery so had emergency c-section. I've now had a tubal ligation and my periods are super heavy and after trying all types of pads, tampons and using both at the same time I'm eager to try something else. Which size should I use? A or B? It seems I should probably use A but I'm not so sure. Any tips for using them? I know about sterilising them and perhaps trimming the little 'stalk' but any tips etc would be handy.

    Thanks

i would go with the A - its easier to fit something thats slightly oversized up there, than have to try and stop something slightly smaller falling out :p

  • Hello last year I did a series of articles for daisygreenmagazine.co.uk called Period Review. The first one was for the moon cup, have a read by typing moon cup into the top right hand corner of the home page

It also looks at other greener alternatives to including sea pearls and luna pads.

    Happy reading
