Just another thing to remember, not getting into the debate about how they operators charge.

On Nokia phones, and probably others I just can't confirm this, there is the option to turn off images which drastically reduces the amont of KB's loaded.

Don't know if this will apply to this thing either but for general mobile internet use, just for things like news and footie scores there really is no need for the images.
  • Hi all, another solution to txting via gprs is by using QuickIM which uses the msn network. you login see whick mates are online. just as you can from your desktop. it seems to me to use very little data, so costs virtually nothing to sent a txt.
check it out at http://www.quickim.com this is easy to d/l and install on most phones. tested on my 6230.

Been using for years, Web to phone, just a text ad at the bottom of the message, i.e Sponsored by Durex or Nescafe.

As Orange pay monthly bundles do not include overseas texts, which is where most of mine go at 16.2p per message this seems like a good deal. I’ve tried the inclusive minutes overseas 07744 numbers, but the line quality to Kenya is appalling, great to south Africa, Namibia, France and Mauritius.

Does anybody know of a web to SMS service that is cost efficient?

Bumble, the new Skype (BETA) for Windows has an SMS facility, I just checked and it costs Euros 0.08 per message (160 charachters) to Kenya.

Are there any products out there that work the way as the one Quincy mentions but that come out of my monthly allowance (I get plenty of texts) and without the ads at the bottom?

If you're on o2 I think you can do it from the o2 web site.

Why not just use your phone?

If you use yahoo instant messenger you will be familiar with the way it uses offline messages.

Some time ago i was in my o2 nokia and discovered that the instant messanger AND yahoo emails can be accessed via GPRS. It was costly with the refresh of every page to see if i had a reply during a live chat but using O2 bolt on service cut down the cost to a minimum, kind of like paying for an internet provider per month (£4-5)

Naturally if you want to chat to your friends using that piece of software they too need a pc to download it, but it does sound very similar to Yahoo and the programme is always there on the wapnet/internet.

Slightly OT but some new services are using mobile net access to make VOIP calls.
There is a free beta service from Voxalot you can try, http://www.voxalot.com/action/static?task=display&itemOID=41

Well guys n gals its a good oen if your on Virgin:
Till the end of september Virgin to Virgin texts are free (1000 a month) after this time its only 3p any how.

If you use it to text other networks the GPRS charge is 0.5p per 1kb so thats cheap as hell, if you have never used Virgin GPRS before at the moment its a 30 day free trial (Just for the Virgin pages though such as Virgin Bites)

Edit when i put my mobile number in to the app it only lets me put 07******** not the last digit any idea's ppl?
