Can't be long before mobile co's ban their use - bit like VOIP & web& walk.

I'd like to know whether it costs anything to check your mailbox as it were? Is there any data upload/download required just to find out you've got no new messages? Maybe that's why its better for heavy texters.

Personally I like the look of the SMSBug service.

So far the only operator that I have found who charges per Kb used is Virgin. The others all seem to charge £1 - £2 per Mb used.

I think they quote a price per Mb put charge per kb. Certainly Virgin and Voda charge per kb and I'm fairly sure the others do too

See the link to Orange in post #8. The way that I read it, is that even if I just sent one of these GPRS texts it would cost a minimum of £3 for up to 1MB of access, on the 'pay as you use' tariff.

Can anyone confirm this?

The only time that I have used GPRS was when I was given a free bundle!

If I remember correctly, on orange you can either buy a 'bundle' of so many Mb which lasts a certain time. Or you can just pay per kb. I have used GPRS on Vodafone and Virgin and they definitely charge per kb

Agree web site is not clear but I'd be amazed if the minimum charge was for 1 Mb. It is just like quoting call costs per minute put charging per second. Somwhere it will probably give a minimum charge (e.g. 1p). I think their website is designed just to show the charge rate falls the more you use

orange definately charge per kb.
I have the 4Mb bundle and i usually use around £2Mb a month of data.. so i never get charged more than the £4... i definately don't get charged £8!!!

They even mention on the web site that for that $mb you can get X number of web pages or X emails etc..

If they charged £4 for every transmission it would be insanely expensive. Its just like quoting prices per minute but charging you per second.

I think that you have missed the point here!

You state that "Orange definately charge per kb" but then go on to say that you normally use around 2MB and still get charged £4.

According to the Orange webpage you can either opt for a bundle i.e. the cheapest - Orange World 4 which gives up to 4MB usage for a monthly cost of £4 or if you 'Pay as you use' you will be charged £3 for every MB used up to 3MB.

How is that charging by the KB?

If you normally use 2MB per month and are being charged £4, you are being charged £2 per MB and are not being charged per KB.

Therfore the lowest ammount that anyone will be charged is either £3 on 'Pay as you use' or £4 for 'Orange World 4' even if you only used say 10KB which is a total rip off.

AH. I misread your post a little.

But they do charge per KB... its just that you can buy a bundle of 4000Kb for £4 or without a bundle pay 0.3p per Kb.
(the bundle works out at 0.1p per Kb.. or 0.2p per Kb if you only use 2Mb).

Its the same as buying a bundle of texts vs paying for texts individually. Pay for them individually and you only pay for what you use.. but you pay more per text. Buy a bundle and you pay less per text... but some might be wasted.

A lot of mobile operators allow you to try bundles/bolt ons for free for a month. Or you could try one of these text services without a bumdle for one month and see how many KB you used. ANd then if it was useful to you sign up to a bundle.

Its still gonna be cheaper than sending texts... but not sure if it will be as useful.
