AH. I misread your post a little.

But they do charge per KB..........

If they did charge per KB used, and during your billing month 100KB was actually used, according to you the charge would be £0.30 but the website states that the charge would actually be £3, which is the minimum charge!

They obviously could charge by the KB if they wanted to, just like they can charge for calls by the second but they want to rip us off.

If it was actually charged by the KB as some other operators do, I would make use of it but not the way that they charge at the moment.

Does it actually say the minimum charge is £3 on the web site? I'd be VERY surprised if the are not charging per kb. Perhaps someone with an Orange phone can ring up Orange CS and ask for clarification

The minimum charge IS NOT £3.

I have been using gprs for a long time now with Orange, and never use 1mb. I never get charged £3! I only check the footie scores on a saturday, so just use a fraction of 1mb, and get charged maybe £1 or £2

    Hope this settles arguement!

    Anyway... :p

SMS messages are getting a lot cheaper these days, so the savings by using something like this are reducing. If you are texting other family members on the same network as you, it can be very cheap - virgin to virgin is 3p (in fact, free until September) and easymobile to easymobile is 1p.

Also, this will only work on fairly modern phones - they need to have Java and GPRS - so 'true moneysavers' who are still using 2001 technology probably won't be able to use it! ;)

Oh, and they will spam you as well. From their privacy policy:

These messages may include but will not be limited to SERVICE UPDATE ANNOUNCEMENTS and advertising messages from partner companies. Thanks for posting and clarifying this issue.

    :T

I personally am not interested in using this 'free' SMS service but have always been put off using GPRS due to the information given on the website, where there is definitely no mention of charging by the KB.

As Orange pay monthly bundles do not include overseas texts, which is where most of mine go at 16.2p per message this seems like a good deal. I’ve tried the inclusive minutes overseas 07744 numbers, but the line quality to Kenya is appalling, great to south Africa, Namibia, France and Mauritius.

Does anybody know of a web to SMS service that is cost efficient?

For you, Bumble, it has to be smsbug.

just to mirror what people are saying. orange gave me a free "unlimited" gprs trial when I took on a new 3g phone. what they forgot to tell me is how long it was for...ended up gettign stung for 200 quid in gprs traffic...so be very careful!

I used a similar service when on holiday in France last year.

When I came back home and saw my bill I received a massive shock as Vodafone charge you something like 75p connection fee everytime you make a connection over GPRS when roaming on top of the data costs. Let's just say I had a very large bill which Vodafone refused to refund as it is clearly stated in the T&C's that I didn't read. :-(

I think this service works well in the UK, but make a check of how your operator charges for GPRS while roaming if you want to use when on holiday.

The mobile phone (Orange SPV E200) I got free when I signed up with Orange 24 months ago has an e-mail client built-in.

I am not sure how many mobile phones have an e-mail client, but that would seem to be a better option if your friends also have phones with e-mail clients.

using the e-mail client I just pay the standard GPRS charges and I am not limited to sending messages to other mobile phones.

Even if my phone did not have an e-mail client (or indeed Java) I can still send and receive e-mails using WAP and an Orange e-mail account.

And, I would have thought that if you need Java on your mobile phone to send/receive these free text messages then someone may well have written an e-mail client in Java for your phone anyway.
