    Morning all,

I think the colds are easing off a little here. Still a good excuse for a hot toddy later;)

    Laundry to do as usual.

Baking to be done too. I'm not sure what yet but probably some sort of wholemeal fruit cake. There are some good recipes in River Cottage Everyday the one I like the look of is Chunky Fig, Apricot and Prune Cake which has wholemeal flour in. Might do a variation on that (no figs or prunes).

I'm also going to make some stew pasties for OH's lunchboxes -another idea from River Cottage Everyday (I love this book). I have a portion of Moroccan lamb stew defrosting which I'm going to put cold in pasties and bake- should get two out of it. There's a portion of vegetable curry in the freezer which will also get pastied next week. Oddly it is labelled 'veg cricket':confused:I think I must have been listening to Test Match Special when I was labelling it:D

I need to tend to my sour dough starter- not looking very promising.

I need some bacon so I'll pop to the butcher for that. I don't know about anyone else but I can't manage without some dry cured streaky bacon in the fridge. It is my 'go to' meat. I use it as a flavouring ingredient mainly but I like to give the kids a bacon sandwich for breakfast now and again.

Breakfast -porridge for all the kids with personalised toppings -blackberry and apple compote and honey for DS1, banana and honey for DS2 and sultanas and honey for DD.
I had hm yogurt and damson puree.

Lunchboxes- OH has chunk of pork pie, tub of coleslaw (white cabbage, carrot, apple, cheese, onion, walnuts plus dressing), banana muffin, apple.
Boys have chunks of pork pie, piece of cheese, cherry toms, grapes and muffins.
DD has tub of cream cheese, breadsticks, cherry toms, cucumber, grapes and muffins.
I shall have leftover chicken and barley soup which was delicious- I'm sure that's why our colds are getting better;)

    Supper- Kipper kedgeree

  • Morning everyone,,,another dry day here :)

Well i got all my jobs done yesterday which surprised me. Today i need to get some more washing done, put a loaf in the breadmaker, clean the bathroom/toilet and whack the hoover round.
Hubby is supposed to be putting some shelves up today and clearing out the front of the house.
His job trial went well yesterday and he was offered the position, starting tomorrow, he will be working at a cookery school as 3rd chef, hes meeting Raymond Blanc next week and Heston Blumenthal the week after, so quite exciting really :)

Dinner today was supposed to be chicken kievs but i went to open the whole chicken last night and it smelt disgusting and had a slimey look about it, was well within date too, have emailed Tesco to complain

Hello, just sneaking onto my school laptop, mainly for a quick look for Claire, as I joined in the offering up of prayers last night, and wanted to add my mite of support.
Just started Nella Last's War borrowed from the mobile library that visited school yesterday. So I may be entering another of my wartime stints, I've saved Thriftlady's experiment somewhere, as well as being up to my neck in Wartime cookbooks & the like... I just feel it coming on like.
My T.A has just come in, so I look really busy typing away.
Got fed up of moaning about DH and Ds, so yesterday evening, after a long time in a dull staff meeting, I marched into the house rolled my sleeves up, and started dishing out orders. I must have caught them on the back foot, cos within minutes one was clearing the washing up, one emptying the washing machine, and I was interfering with all of the jobs I'd demanded they do. Normally it takes me an hour to land, and get done enough things to enable me to sit down with my cup of tea, last night it took 15 mins. I still had to leap around doing the evening meal.
Which brings me to my slow cooker. Will someone here please pat me gently on the arm and tell me I can leave it on overnight, and the potatoes will be hard if I expect miracles after 4 hours on low. I'm convinced I'm saving electricty by minimising the time its on, and we've been getting some pretty rough meals from the thing. Is there a S.C. thread on here? I'd like my chicken thighs to experience something better than a watery grave.

    Morning!

was up early as we have workmen coming to do something to the rendering on the house and yesterday the scaffolders came when I had just got out of the shower:eek: poor chap - I answered the door wrapped in a robe and towells!:D

OSiness today - do online shop, washing, ironing, cleaning - and its supposed to be my day off:rolleyes:

Later DH and I need to do some recycling at the skip.
We also need to bath the dogs again as they've been scratching - hope its not the fleas again:eek: I'll also chuck their bedding away and give them new just in case. Luckily they dont come near the furniture as we keep them in the kitchen and garden. I cant understand how people can have their pets in bed with them_pale_

    PP - hope you're feeling ok x

Hope you all have a good day, am off to read yesterdays thread now x

Bargainbird - Claire I've just read about your shocking news of yesterday and want to send you and your DHs family some (((hugs))) I will say a prayer for you all x
    Do what you love :happyhear
  • Bargainbird - any more news?

Made a lovely gingerbread cake from the Be-ro book last night, never made it before but was yum. Had a clear out of the baking cupboard, and I have a packet of mixed luxury fruit that has been pre-soaked in something exotic that is best before end of this month. Any ideas for a yummy fruit cake I can make to use it up?

Also did some ironing last night (miracles of mircales, i can't abide ironing), so kids uniform is sorted until next Tuesday, and I won't have to iron before then!

Today I was going to stay in bed this morning when kids got up as I have a headache, but they were so noisy and kept on coming in and out the room o chat to me there is no way I would have got back to sleep, so I got up. I am still in my pyjamas though, so need to shower and get dressed!

Got one more episode of casualty to watch that is recorded, so might do that later depending on if the headache goes or not!

    Have a good day all.

I regularly have the slow cooker on low overnight without problems.

Apart from when i find DH scoffing chicken curry or pea and ham soup at 7a.m.!

We have been spending the last four or five days doing 200 mile round trips to see elderly auntie in hospital every day as her condition was deteriorating. She died yesterday morning and the hospital made sure she was as comfortable as possible and was not in pain. She fought so hard but after her second stroke etc. she had no more strength left.

We had hoped she might be able to come back to the bungalow at some stage and were planning to get it all spruced up and get new windows doors and kitchen etc. Will be spending the next week or so sorting things out so will try to pop in here when I can.

    Hugs to everyone

  • Good Morning - here I am at work as usual - how I wish I had a whole day to read the posts on this forum - they are so inspiring!
My youngest son has just gone to Uni so I am feeling a bit sad :(
I have cheered up a bit though today - my FIL sent me 4 huge bags of veggies from his alloment. So it looks like tonight I will be blanching and soup making. My son loves homemade soup so I am going to freeze some portions for him to take back to Uni when he visits. The rest will probably be eaten for lunches. It is hard work but worth it when I have a freezer full of free soup and frozen veggies!
  • Hi everyone

Well I am sat at uni. It's my first week back (4th year) and it is just a week of pointless meetings. So today I have to hang around campus all day just for one 90 min (pointless) meeting. I want to get home and see my kittens and keep working on my Christmas cross stitch projects!

Hope other people are having a more intersting day than me!

    Hi Peeps,
    just catching up :D

Topher - There is a slow cooker thread here http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=43570

I regularly leave mine on overnight and all day whilst out at work and have never had a problem with it, i leave it on the lowest setting and hardly put any liquid in unless i`m making something like chiili or bolognaise.

Taplady - Our doggies sleep in the bedroom on their own beds (they have a duvet each for upstairs which is washed regularly) they are wormed and treated for fleas regularly whether they need it or not and are given a good grooming with the brush set every couple of days - in fact they are cleaner than some of the people that i come across  so i have no qualms with them being upstairs. I also like the fact that they wake us at the smallest noise with a growl or a nudge from the side of the bed so if there is anyone prowling around at night then we know about it.:D I do think that the grooming helps with keeping them clean more than most things, our friend whose doggies live outside for most of the summer have a much coarser coat.

    Catch up later guys.

    SD

EDIT - Elona - I`m so sorry to hear of your loss ((((HUGS)))) for you and your family x
Planning on starting the GC again soon :p
