Need some advice - stealing
Comments
-
Ok, so she admitted taking 2 items and disputed the other stuff. Her social worker suggested that we all meet to discuss and resolve. I reported the theft to the police and had a call-log number, they advised me to attend the meeting and then get back to them if not resolved to my satisfaction.
So, the meeting was today. She turned up late, was surly and aggressive, got tearful and denied taking the food items. She had been given a copy of them missing items and poked fun at all of the items, saying that I didn't even like half of the items so what was the problem with these items 'disappearing'. All very childish. When I said that I had reported this to the police, she became defensive and said that she would loose her job if she had a criminal record and if I wanted to destroy her life with my 'silly nonsense' then it would be on my shoulders. I stayed calm and reasonable throughout.
The end result is that Social Services will reimburse me for the items taken on me providing them with a list and prices. I have decided against following this up with the police as I will be reimbursed and hopefully this will be the end of the matter!
Onwards and upwards, just got to deal with the debt agencies calling for her and the letters through the letterbox now!
Thanks everyone

Glad that you're not out of pocket due to it (or you won't be when they reimburse you). Have you worked out the total that will be owed to you? I'd have been tempted to follow through with the police to teach her a lesson, though I can understand you just wanting to get the money and have it over with. Did you get anything in writing? I suppose she'll either learn her lesson and realise the close call, and not be daft again, or she'll be stupid again sometime soon and will mess up her job prospects for good.0

I am going to cost it up via tesco.com and email it to her social worker.
Am glad that it is over but sad that it ended this way
My sw asked if I was going to go back to the police and encouraged me to do so, but I just want to move on. This has taken over my head and my life for the past week so just want to put an end to itEver wonder about those people who spend £2 apiece on those little bottles of Evian water? Why are social services paying tax payers money to covertheft?
Why are social services doing their best to keep someone criminally minded off the official records?
Not your problem and agree move on, but you do have to wonder.....0 -

Glad you got it sorted.
It does now appear that the taxpayer will be paying for stolen goods. Strange times we live in.0 -

understand where you are coming from.. but wont the girl just do something like this again now if she thinks that sh can just get away with it without any repercussions and that SS (and hence taxpayers) will just foot the bill?0 -
Is she on benefits? Maybe taking it out of her benefits regularly, like they do with court fines, would actually teach her a lesson?
ie: you take it, you pay for it!**Thanks to everyone on here for hints, tips and advice!**:D

Not neccasarily - and if it was my daughter and she had done someting this silly I would bale her out before I would see her get a criminal record and I bet most of the parents on here would do too.carolinosourus wrote: »Is she on benefits? She won't be on benefits SS are responsible for her until she finishs her education, however you have no way of knowing if they are stopping the repayment from either her allowance or from her leaving care grant.
She turned up at the meeting, many kids wouldn't have, I expect the surliness was a way to hide her embarrassment. The situation has been resolved and it's now time for the OP to move on and let the girl learn from her mistakes.Mama read so much about the dangers of drinking alcohol and eating chocolate that she immediately gave up reading.0 -
I agree gizmo, SS have simply done what parents would have done. They made her show up to a meeting and account for herself and then they paid for her indiscretions. It would be good to know whether they're docking her allowance, but hopefully simply showing her that her mistakes wont be ignored is a message that will eventually get through.0

Because if they don't, people like the OP wouldn't get involved, and there would need to be more care homes to house these young adults. This would cost the taxpayer more.
The more she gets involved with the criminal justice system, the more likely she is to go to prison. This would cost the taxpayer more.0
