Sorry to hijack the thread here, but I have some rings, old earrings etc. that I thought I might get rid of and wondered what happens about the stones (some real, some cubic zircona etc. )? Do I take these out and then weight the gold or do they factor this into the weight ?

http://www.hattongardenmetals.com/ I used this place. It was talked about on here. I can highly recommend it. Great price and money in a/c really fast.
  • As a new user I can't publish a link but if you google gerrardsonline or kitco you will find the top prices. Some dealers will not deal with the general public.
Note if you go to your local market or boot sale dealer they will offer you probably between £1 and 50p per gram below the top price as 1. They are trying to make a living from it and 2. They are taking a chance that the price doesn't drop before they get to their dealer. They will always weigh the gold and check it's hallmarks before offering you a price.
Do watch out for the vultures who descend at car boots and if they do not weigh the gold you know you are probably getting ripped off. :A
  • Hello all, this is my first post here so I hope I'm doing it right!

Just wondering if anyone can advise exactly which type of jewellers will buy gold from you?

I live in Bristol, so not really close enough to London or Manchester to warrant a train ticket or the petrol to get there (might as well not bother selling the jewellery in that case!) so am looking locally to sell various bits and bobs that I don't really want anymore.

I'm guessing that the big chain jewellers would laugh me out the door, saying they don't buy jewellery, only sell it. Does anyone know if most smaller independent places will buy it, or am I best off finding a long list of them on Yell and ringing round them all?

Don't actually know what karat most of the jewellery is either, so can't really look at the gold calculators to check prices. Which is annoying!
  • Hi there, I trawled around the intenet looking for someone to buy a chain i've had for years, its a bit old hat now and I prefer silver, but I couldn't find anyone to buy it for the piece, not just the weight, eventually I called up jewellery4cash, as they had an 'ask the jeweller feature' I spoke to man who talked me through the process and said that on some occasions they can pay more than just the weight. (by the way it was an 18carrot chain with an emeral pendant thingy,) I sent it in and asked if he would call me when he had looked at it. He did yesterday and offered me £85! I was so happy, it will go towards a couple of christmas presents (never too early to start!) Recieved the cheque today, and thought he deserved a mention. Thought I would share it, as it took me ages to find jewellery4cash on google, but worht it!
  • BTW blue eyed girl, I live in leeds, so didn't fancy the train journety either, jewellery4cash is an internet company! didn't have to show my ugly mug into any shop, (only the post office)!:money:
  • Its true there are a lot of con merchants trying to buy gold people like us for next to nothing, in my experience if you are in London you should probably head to hatten gardens to sell it, in birmingham there is lois jewellery who are good and in Manchester there is Salford and Manchester Gold Buyers who pay good too!!

I believe Martin is in the final stages of an article on these services and a mystery shopping exercise by the researchers. You might want to hold on to your gold a little while.
