Have a word with your local recycling team. Ive just this second been & collected my can o worms from the council, cost just a fiver.
I'm phoning my local council after lunch to see if they do anything like this. I have gotten a free composter from them before, but I'd like to find out if they supply wormeries.

In regard to your query, I found the following info:
Grass cuttings ! Caution - High in nitrogen and a good "activator", but care must be taken not to overwhelm the compost bin with grass as it can turn into a slimy mess. Mix well with other materials. Do not add more than 2 handfuls of grass clippings to a 70-90 litres worm bin at any one time

  • Hi,
I have a wormcity (https://www.wormcity.co.uk) stacking wormery, which is excellent, bigger & cheaper than the can-o-worms. It stands 4 trays high, and allows me to recycle all my waste food.

It has been running for around 6 months, and already it has produced loads of compost and worm tea.
Wormeries are excellent, and great fun

I've got a composter and I'm terribly enthuiastic about it. However I'm also one of the least patient people in the world so I've decided to introduce some worms to it to speed up the composting process. Anyone any ideas on the cheapest place to get worms?

Well water a small area of the garden and place an upturned cardboard box over it, i.e. crisp box or similar. Leave for 2 or three days. Capture loads of worms that come up. Cheapest way that I have found. Good luck

WigglyWigglers also sell worms for compost purposes. Have a look at the catalogue as there are several different types on offer.

I saw worms on sale somewhere else as well, if I find the link, I'll edit it in :)
  • ive been reading about composting in the boards, and thought id let you know about a company called wigglywigglers, http://www.wigglywigglers.co.uk who sell composting bins etc, and worms to go in them, the benefit of this is the worms speed up the process, and the special bins collect the "worm juice" and you can water the garden with it, acts just like baby bio etc.

my parents have one, and ill be getting one once the house has gone through!!!

hope this is of help to you all...

Thanks! :) Wiggly wigglers has been mentioned a few times on the Green board and we also have it bookmarked in the "useful links" sticky at the top of the board :)

I've got a wormery bin from Freecycle, and now need to stock it.

Where's the best place to get worms (bearing in mind we are on a tight budget).

My other thought is, would the Bokashi bran system work in the wormery bin, or is it too large (it's about the size of the old black rubbish bins) as I was looking into this before we got the bin.

    :)
