  • GC - ta oddly enough I did think of you this am - as I wrote my post I knew it was all those HALT things. Sometimes my brain doesn't engage with my memory.

I need to manage my triggers better and think rather than react - I've been really careful lately and managed myself well. I really do need to keep on top of things to make myself stronger.

The most important thing I've learnt is that it was absolutely a relapse and I now do not normally drink, especially at home, alone - so that's progress. (of sorts)

Oh Fay, my heart goes out to you as I have done that myself many many times. That's the craziness of the hold that alcohol has over us and we think it will make things better. Funnily enough, I remember years ago when I was trying to give up smoking, I had a blazing row with my then OH one night and thought, right, that's it!! I'll show him - I'm going to go and get some cigarettes and smoke them. So I did and sat there and smoked them ALL (along with a bottle or more of wine, no doubt) and then next day I thought What AM I doing? Someone upsets me and I pay them back by trying to hasten my early death?!!"
    I did laugh (eventually)....
Fear not, today is another day - a lovely one for you I hope. Look forward.

Exactly - that's a massive part of alcoholism. Drinking alcoholics will do almost anything to drink, and even when it is so irrational.

It's the alchemy of booze that tells us we don't have a major drinking problem (maybe a minor one) and that we can stop any time if we really really tried hard. The harsh reality is that many find it very tough to stop drinking, and if they do stop for a short while, they can be very miserable and have constant feelings of irritability & being discontent.
There are not too many long term success stories - many of the old timers on this thread have disappeared. I hope they are still AF, but I don't think all of them are....

Have any of you had any tests in relation to drinking? dh has had his results of his liver function (among others) today and they are all 'normal' he does drink a fair amount and I am thinking that he will probably feel like he doesn't need to worry about his drinking with this result....

I haven't had tests myself 69chick but I know many others on the thread have and will probably respond soon. The way I look at it is that if you believe what we read about safe units etc then regularly drinking too much must be a bit like Russian Roulette (and that doesn't take into account all other risks when drinking too much) in that if you drink too much regularly then it will catch up with you health-wise eventually. So, liver tests or not I'm cutting down and taking milk thistle as well. I posted the other week that if it wasn't for the publicity on units then I probably would just carry on enjoying drinking every day. Of course many on this thread will also talk about denial...

Sorry if that's a bit deep everyone. Have a good evening!!

What's so insidious and powerful about alcoholism is that when we think we have got it sussed, have a few days AF under our belt, it comes back to bite us hard.

    So very true.

As for liver tests I haven't had any but I did watch a BBC programme 'do I drink too much' the other week. in it I seem to remember the specialist saying that because the liver is such an amazing organ it has to be pretty badly damaged before anything shows up (they did liver rigidity I think???) so the value of test are limited.

tonight has been fine, but then I still feel tired and a bit ill form yesterday so it's quite easy. tomorrow will be a challenge I think.

thanks Jo for the idea - I am going to have a glass of milk and a flake now!!
    Trying to keep in budget.
