Sky showing Bruce Almighty

  • Hi all,

I think we all need to realise that posting an opinion on a forum, especially on one called 'Vent' is open to interpretation and other points of view. People are going to have varied opinions and will often be quite forthright in those opinions, but the underlying rule that we try to encourage on these forums is that people should try and keep subjects discussed fairly light hearted.

Obviously although not specifically about the current crisis in South Asia, this topic was bound to cause some opinion, and i would advise that it would be best not to post such a topic if you feel that people having other views may offend.

That said, this thread is, once again, a victim of people actually arguing not just about the topic, but the fact that they are arguing!

We really find these types of threads hard to moderate - we dont want to stop people having views, but at the same time people must expect opinions to be met with conflicting opinions. Some might say that it is the strength of people's views that are causing the problems, to which we could simply ban any non moneysaving issues and discussion from the site, which would kill a lot of the community here and is something we would only do as a last resort.

However, despite pleas over Christmas from the team (myself included), it seems this year is already getting off to a slightly disappointing start.

Again, i can only reiterate that we all try and present our views as succinctly as we can, and try to be more tolerant of others, but i would emphasise that it might be best not to become involved in a discussion you feel might cover ground that may offend.

For many, the line where offence is cause varies dramatically and we try our best to only step in where we feel people are being delibrately abusive/racist/improper - but we try to allow people to have points of view too.

Thanks for taking the time to read and for your support.
  • I've just sat down to watch Bruce Almighty this evening and Sky gave a warning about a scene that may cause some distress in light of recent events. Looks like they have responded to complaints.

  • I hadn't realised until now that this thread had got so heated over the past few dyas so I wanted to add a point in response to a couple of people who got heated up.

    <<Irv posted

this is an important point. a tidal wave is caused by the moon's pull and a tsunami is caused by an earthquake. wikipedia have a nice page explaining it all. also while japan is in asia it is several hundred miles away from the areas affected by the tsunami.

I can't decide if you're upset because the clip showed scenes of devestation caused by water which you may think inaproriate or if you don't know the difference between todal wave and tsunami or you don't know where japan is. >>

    <<franky posted

I've got this on DVD and ran it through earlier, as a previous poster has said the clip in the film was not about a tsunami so you couldn't have seen one mentioned in the film,
so have you exaggerated this in order to make a topic for a thread??
and you also encouraged others to call sky and complain about this, without giving the true facts ?? >>

In the television report, the announce calls it a tidal wave at first BUT later refers to it as a Tsunami. So TM was correct and IMO Irv and franky owe TM an apology.

    Does it really matter?

With complete respect, I don't see the point in dragging all this up again.

It would seem you are just trying to straighten things out, but by mentioning specifics again, it just means the situation may get inflamed all over again.

It would appear an uneasy truce has developed, lets just leave it at that?

A tidal wave and a tsunami are very much alike
    Definition
    tidal wave
1 an extremely large wave caused by movement of the earth under the sea, often caused by an earthquake

    Definition
    tsunami

an extremely large wave caused by movement of the earth under the sea, often caused by an earthquake

The same definition is in the Oxford English Dictionary but taking this aside I think some apologies have already been made :)

I have decided to post further on this thread in order to clear up any misunderstandings.

Firstly, thankyou smokeysmate for your comments. :D I specifically watched the beginning and appropriate mid section of this film in order to make sure I got my facts straight. I also heard the warning and am pleased to also report that the film mentions a "tidal wave" and in the next sentance, calls it "an unusual tsunami" (Oh, and I am also aware of where Japan is, but that's beside the point :) )

I would just like to make a few points here. I re-read my post that started 'franky'. It was originally posted as a reply to franky but then I did put all my feelings at that time in there. Following replies from franky, I decided to remove franky's name from the beginning, so that it did not look like a reply directed at him/her. However, I have re-read it and it stays. Sorry, but that's the way I feel.

Franky also mentions a friend who's involved but can't talk about - is this meant to imply I have just thrown this comment in to try and elicit sympathy? You do not know my situation, but FYI, this is the truth and it would be inappropriate to discuss this person's involvement as I am sure everyone can understand.

I have re-read my original post and no, I did not ask people to harangue sky - merely asked if there were others who would contact them.

Others have mentioned that I should not post if I don't want people to disagree with me. Far from it, I am open to all views, just not personal insults thank you. My comment about everyone on chat forums thinking the same so how nice it would be was meant to be tongue in cheek - unfortunately this came across wrong. :(

Thus, I hope I have made my points clearly and calmly. All the above should be read in a calm manner - I am not having a go at anyone. Everyone is entitled to their own views. I have received pm's from people, including one 'adversary' and with the latter, everything is now resolved satisfactorily. ;D

I am still awaiting a reply from Sky, other than their 'your complaint will be dealt with in due course' type reply. I just wonder if they'll say how many complaints they did receive?

Yours, in a friendly, happy and calm manner

    TM ;D
