Why on earth is he paying her phone and pocket money (maintenance is a different thing) when she behaves like this? What maintenance is he going to pay when she leaves home to go to university; will it be in addition to the normal student funding?
^^ agree with this.
I don't have much contact from my dad but he doesn't pay me anything except some money and card for birthday and xmas. I wouldn't expect him to.
The daughter needs a slap! (metaphoric slap of course)0 -
I thought maintenance payments stopped the same time as child benefit, after A levels and not university as there is student funding available.£2 Coins Savings Club 2012 is £4

My husband has an 18 year old daughter from his first marriage. She was not happy he split with his ex and has as little contact as she can with him, only contacting him if she wants money.
He will be paying maintenance, pocket money and her mobile phone for another 4 years. Until she ends education.
She sat her A levels this year, for some reason her results were not in the paper, despite his repeated requests to know how she gets on she just ignores him and will not tell him. He is now concerned she did not sit them. He rang the college but they said due to data protection and she is 18 they cannot tell him how she got on or if she did sit them. They said students can request for the details not to go into the paper.
Is there anyway he can find out, his ex will not talk to him !!!
Also she should of now started university any tips for finding out if she is going, he is happy to pay her maintenance etc...for her education, however if she is not going or stops going he wants to know.
Thanks for any help
Hi
I refused to tell my ex-father when or whether I had gone to university and what my A Level results were. In fact, when lawyer's letter arrived demanding the information, my response was that if I had to tell him where I was, I would not be going to university.
However, there was no legal requirement for him to pay me any money whilst I continued my education and I had no contact for several years previously.
I think you need to separate out two things.
1. No college or university is going to tell you if his daughter is attending, nor what her results were. She could sue them under the DPA. Since she is over 18 years old, her mother is not required to do this either.
2. However, since the continued maintenance is dependant on her remaining in education, it is reasonable to expect the daughter to produce some evidence that she is in full-time education. perhaps a copy of a letter confirming her student fees loan?
As long as you keep that separate from wanting information about her results and which university she is attending, the request is reasonable. If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0 -

Excellent advice here. Go with this :TMFW - <£90kAll other debts cleared thanks to the knowledge gained from this wonderful website and its users!0 -
And don't forget that once you find out that she's started university,he'll want regular confirmation that she's still attending.
I agree with Bestpud that any time confirmation is not available, stop the payments until it is.
He'll find that he gets regular updates if the money comes into the equation!0 -
I'm with Rikki. I thought education is usually until end of A levels or pre-uni. Once they go to uni they are classed as independent adults, and pay their own way, usually with student loans.
my ex stopped paying for my daughter at the end of her college foundation year, all under CSA's rules which was as above.
i would check that order again, and see what counts as education. I'm a single mum who has been kept short for years by my ex, so i'm not for dads doing what they can to get out of paying, but i think dad is being taken for a ride here.0 -
If she's asking you for money still then i guess you should be privy to the information. But if the only money she recieves is via mateince and she doesn't get on with her dad i don't see why she should have to talk to him.
Agreeing with the post above child matenice doesn't usually go as far as university, mine stopped just after my 18th birthday
My ex-dad never gave a toss so i never told him anything about uni. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
Thank you for all of your responses.
I shall have to contact our solicitor to see the legal implications of threatening to withdrawing payment if she does not provide proof of attendance.
Once again thank you so much it is very much appreciated.0 -
My two sons' father was not obliged to pay maintenance after the end of CHild Benefit. Check the exact details of the financial order and see if it actually specifies higher education. Or contact the Court who issued it to ask their advice re proof of attendance to support payments.0
