Also, I think I would hide too if I knew I was getting to get a slap!
  • I remember visiting my aunt/uncle years ago, we were ushered into the back/living room and my 18 year old cousin was crouched on the fire surround tugging away to himself. His family treated it as though there was nothing going on at all.

    I find this shocking

On another note, I have a 8 month old son does the same thing everytime you change his nappy  I'm dreading him doing things like thiswhen he's older , I'll be mortified, A talk for daddy and son I think! ;)

Let's be thankful for small mercies, eh?

When might a 'full hearty punch' be the right thing to do?

I have to agree with the others, I think any kind of punishment in this situation was unsuitable. I am also concerned with the title of the thread, in that you see your son's actions as a 'problem'. With no disrespect meant, I think that the problem was your reaction.

I would suggest contacting Parentline (0808 8002222) so you can discuss your own feelings towards this issue, and possibly look at strategies for when something like this happens again.
    Gone ... or have I?
  • Oh wow, a male having a 'bit of a fiddle' whatever next ;) If you think about it, most of the male population probably does that on a fairly regular basis-the only difference is your son hasn't learnt when it is and isn't appropriate to do it. At 5 years old your son will just be thinking that it feels nice such as rubbing your elbow if you bash it-there is nothing sexual about what he is doing from his point of view. Perhaps just talk to him and explain that although there is nothing wrong in touching his own body, it's something to do by himself in his bedroom perhaps, and that other people don't really want to see that sort of thing. if in future you catch him doing it in public then perhaps you could make him wash his hands everytime-that might be enough to discourage him doing it in public. Alsoo he probably found your reaction to it funny rather than the situation as he probably didn't realise he was doing anything 'wrong'.
  • My DS is 4, 5 in December and he is always messing with his. TBH my DH is 32 and he's always sratching his in public so I have little hope!!!

So why mention it, even as a possibility?

surely at his age its nor masturbations it is exploration and he found somewhere quiet to do it.

my 3 year old loves wandering around without her trousers and knickers on. i at least try to keep her knikcers on for the sake of decency should anyone unexpectedly call round.

Out of interest, do you have children?

I'm asking because this is not uncommon at all - children do not have the social mores and graces that we do and playing with your willy is a bit fun, it doesn't necessarily occur to them that other people may find it embarrasing.

:T i have to put a belt on whatever trousers my 21 month old wears for the simple fact if he can remove his trousers and nappy then he has a whale of a time pulling his willy. he is obsessed with it. usually if granny murray is on tv which is quite worrying. :rotfl:

its not the tugging that concerns me, he is 21 months old for goodness sakes. its the fact he has peed and even worse pooped on my carpet during one of these bouts of nakedness.
