Proposing/engagement ring

Hello all,
I am going to propose to my girlfriend in the next few weeks. I have got hold of a lovely white gold engagement ring that costs £1,275 in the shops but I managed to get it for £280.
I know my gf will love it, it's a perfect ring for her tastes. The thing is I want it to be a surprise, special proposal. The ring may or not fit her. I don't know her ring size and I know it's a different size for that finger anyway.
I've got to hand over the money for the ring tomorrow, i've had it valued and it's a worth alot more than what i'm paying.
My worry is how ban I get her to try it on without ruining the surprise? Or could I propose soon and let her try it on at the time and if it doesn't fit, maybe get it resized? Is that easy to do because if anything we'll have to get it made smaller.
If anyone can help or has been in this position before please give me some urgent advice!
Cheers all

Just go for it and pop the question. The ring can be re-sized at any time, the fact it might not fit right now is nothing to worry about.
The only way to sort the size before hand is to "borrow" one of her rings that already fits that finger and take that to them to get the size from that.
When I proposed to my OH, the ring was too small, but it was easily re-sized...
GOOD LUCK!!!If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands

Is resizing it smaller easily done? how much is it roughly? Thanks!0

Hi there, my H2B bought my ring, then proposed and then we got it resized. It only cost £20 to get that done and I was only without my ring for a few days.
Get down on one knee and get her asked, then send her this way for lots of tips on hpw to save the pennies!

Resizing smaller is VERY easy to do. They just heat it up and remove enough gold to make it the right size. I couldn't tell you how much it was, the place I got mine from included one size adjustment and one recoating in the price...
They did tell you about the recoating of white gold right? If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands

I'm not telling her I got nearly a grand off the price ha ha. Lovely ring and she always talks of marriage etc, so hopefully I wont get a knock back!0

They haven't told me about recoating... it wasn't from a shop.

Well, white gold doesn't actually exist. A white gold ring is yellow gold plated with rhodium. It will need recoating to keep it looking white. It usually costs between £10 and £15 to get this done and will need to be done every 12 - 24 months depending on how much wear and tear it is subjected to...If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands

Thats not too bad. So say we need to resize it smaller and coat it, i'll be looking at around £50 or just over?
You lot are an amazing help, thanks alot0 -
Well, obviously you wont need to recoating for quite a while. You'll only need to re-sized initially. Should only cost you £20 or £30 for now...If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands

What a dipstick I am, I thought you were saying I need to recoat it after it's resized, as in straight away!
Well I've got such a good deal on it so I wouldn't mind anyway. Found out just how much they take the pee with the mark up on rings. The ring would be priced up at around £1500 in a normal jewellers. I'll be making the proposal more special with the money I saved0
