I have friends at Caley and my brother has an honours degree from there. They do seem to have a lower criteria for entry compared to Strathy and Glasgow, but their expectation of work when you're there will be on a par. Kind of annoying that people are getting straight into 3rd year of a degree course with so little academic credentials. Not being able to write a paper and reference it correctly is shocking! I spent a large part of first year getting my head round essay writing.
Not being snide, but maybe as it's tourism you're doing, papers aren't that important? It sounds like what my dad would call a 'mickey mouse' degree.

  • yes i am aware that tourism isn't the most prestige of degrees, but i am damn proud of myself for getting into uni.
I have suffered from depression, self harm and an eating disorder for the past 7 years. So i never walked out of school with good exam results. But i have always been good at spanish and french. So i took a different route to get into uni, via college. The work i done in college may not have been the best, or written in uni style, or refrenced. But i am still proud of what i managed to achieve.

Even so, an honours student should still be expected to be able to write academic essays, exams, presentations. All of which will require referencing properly.

Yes, and you should congratulate yourself. However, that doesn't really get away from anything. I too have suffered those for the past few years, but I still know how to write an essay. Having difficulties in life should be no excuse for anything, in my opinion.

    .

I taught Travel and Tourism at BTEC National level for years and even at that level my students had to reference their assignments and hand in unaided work!

I don't think that anybody's criticising you personally, simply commenting on the parlous state of HE teaching in colleges in your part of the world.

However, I don't think that all this should be coming as a shock to you at this stage; I know several of us have been explaining the way things are to you more than 6 months ago and your answer has always been that your college tutors know best!

Well, yes, I was expected to be able to do that from Standard Grade level, so about age 15 or so. My school was a below-average state school too!

Of course, one might not be referencing in an academically formal way, but certainly attributing quotations to a source.

I can't see how anyone could do an HE course without being able to quote from different sources and attribute them appropriately.

Or at least use a book or some other source material!

I am from a similar area (Ayrshire instead of Glasgow) and I am absolutely shocked at the standards expected, or not as the case seems to be.

But i am not an honors student. Honors year is 4th year, and i am going into 3rd year just to get my degree. I might leave after 3rd year, i might stay and do an honors year, i don't know that yet.
Well i have never been shown how to write like that, and have never had to write like that before either. I don't have a higher English, i only have a standard grade english, which i got a 3 for.

and i don't understand why anyone in college would have to anything like that.
