I have next to nothing that doesn't need mending, or isn't more than ten years old. Its all very well being yourself and all that, but to ignore the fact that our clothes give out messages about who we are and who we want to connect with, as well as more intangible things like self respect, is ridiculous.

For years, we have laughed about the 'bag lady' look, and people round here who go shopping in their PJ's, but caught a glimpse of myself in Mr T before and wondered why I had gone out looking like a tramp. Jeans, old trainers, hair scragged back in a ponytail, no make up and coat with buttons missing.

I'm glad I'm not the only one, but I'm sorry you're going through it too, gill - I think if we want to connect to the people we like, in RL, we have to look something of the part - I'd be dubious about *wanting* to connect with somebody who looks like you describe, and I look exactly like that myself. So, yes. Upping the game. To that end, I've been working on a word document offline, doing Cheery Daffs' goals exercise - one month, three month, six month - I've put in year end, and I've also put in the Van Gogh challenge stuff - are you in that? I'll pm you separately if you're not and you're interested.

Its really powerful to do - I've got 6 categories - home, garden, health, social, money and creativity. And I'm putting in goals for each of those things in each of those time frames. Obviously, its flexible, but Cheery describes that flexibility really well on her thread, in the way she updates the goals every month. Its the old saw: if you don't plan your life, it just happens. And thats not what I want for myself!

  • KC I've not read some of those challenges, one of my things is to catch up on a few diaries I've let lapse and cherry pick ideas. Goals is something I always struggle with, I tend to drift a bit, find a bit of a niche and stay there 'in my comfort zone'

I also need to sort my clothing out BUT I need to lose some weight first :(, I have 4 or 5 pairs of trousers (all fairly smartish .. sort of casual smart or smart casual!), but I can only JUST fit into one pair and I spend all my time in yoga pants at the moment , that and t-shirts and I look slobby and hate it!

That sounds very interesting KC, but if I'm honest I'm like Gill in that I'm full of gusto initially, then it tails off :o

As I work in the industry, I think that clothes and how you put yourself together definitely send out messages and you are (rightly or wrongly) judged accordingly. I hope I'm not that shallow and take people as I find them, but do see evidence of how simply altering how you dress attracts different reactions.

A good smart coat can hide a multitude of sins and that would be my no:1 investment. However, just getting a good haircut and putting on a slick of lippy makes all the difference. Time and simply being bothered often prevent us doing that - but the effort is worth it for your self esteem and that good feeling snowballs :)

Sounds like we're all more or less on the same page. I can dress up in a few outfits if I need to, but look closely and even that is falling apart.

Comfort zones - thats a whole new kettle of fish for me! I suppose this plan I'm working on is so that I don't just live in my comfort zone - I want more of a life than that, and I need to be the one to go get it for me, nobody else will, of course. The categories are what I said above, except that "social" is now "social and travel" - you know me and travelling :D

Right, I'm off to cook some pasta, watch Miss Potter, and in between times think about the life I want (and keep drinking, to get rid of this lurgy).

Thank you all, for being around today and giving me feedback - when I make my breakthrough trading, I am *definitely* throwing a party.

  • The comments about clothes, and not buying them, really hit home for me too. I hate clothes shopping - for a start I struggle to find stuff that looks good on me without immediately having to be altered (I'm short, just 5'1" - but with longer legs than my height really justifies, so the standard "petite" trouser length of 27" is too short on me, while 29" is a fraction too long. I'd love to be able to wear smart boots all the time, preferably with a heel, but my feet protest and come out in blisters, so I end up in my Timberlands or trainers all the time I'm not at work. Because I've got that sort of footwear on it rules out wearing a smart coat, so I end up in my waterproof jacket (which I love, and is very warm and cosy, but still it's not exactly *smart* and so it goes on. :(
