I've always wanted to visit CAT.

Ryton isn't very to access via public transport really. The nearest travelodge is probably Dunchurch, but again one suited more for cars, it's at a services with a little chef, so nothing in walking distance otherwise. In Dunchurch itself there's a super indian restaurant, if you want veggie options they will do main course sizes of the vege starters. We normally have a main course tarka dahl & their veggie stuffed peppers and share.

Not found anywhere good for veggie options near the hotel, I've tried the happycow website and google, but nothing really stands out as OK, so having to defect for a while, but I am managing to avoid the wheat/gluten currently.

I've got a couple of friends who work for CAT, and I once went to stay in one of their cabins (years ago!) It was great, had to fetch our own water, light fires for heating, harvest food etc, wasn't completely without electricity but it did give you a good idea of the amount of energy/resources that go in to ordinary living. (and they're not all that loopy! :D)

I have a good idea of the energy required for ordinary modern living, that's why you'll pry my modern conveniences from my cold, dead hands...

Talking of energy saving have you seen this offer in the weekly email ?

Energy Saving Plug, Water Widget & Flush Bag
Update 24 Nov. The Free Green Gadgets site is struggling due to traffic volumes from the weekly email. If you can't get through, try again later.
limeplug.jpg Every mainland UK household (sadly, NI's excluded) can grab a totally free LIME energy saving plug worth £20, a water widget and flush bag.
    How to grab the kit
Just enter the code 'FLUSH' on Free Green Gadgets before Mon 6 Dec 2010. The kit'll be delivered within 28 days. There is no P&P to pay.
The scheme's run by Grass Roots, a company helping the Government meet its Carbon Emissions Reduction Target.
    How it helps you save

The plug helps you save energy by instantly switching appliances OFF rather than to standby. You can use it for one gadget, eg, a TV or PC or several appliances on one extention cable.

Remember bigger savings of around £300/year can be made by cutting energy costs; see the Compare Gas & Electricity guide

Ellidee, thank you! That looks really good - I must admit, I didn't read it through properly, but I'll definitely go for that now.

Thats a good tip, thanks Z.

    There's a difference?

Norty Z! :rotfl:My sister introduced me to the California crazy thing earlier this year, and I love it - I'd describe me as a Calcrazy person, definitely.

It does, doesn't it - and see above, I'm both Calcrazy and loopy myself :D

I started to clear the slate away, so I could relocate it and then put the compost bin there (end of the garden, by the shed) but I was doing it *so* slowly, so I ended up getting a trowel and just pushing it to one side - I'll sort it later, probably rinse it through one of those gardeners sieves. So the compost bin is operational :j tho it has hardly anything in it - I'm still using frozen veg :o so no waste right now. I could put shredded paper in it tho, couldn't I.... and no seed heads, not this time :o - a lesson from the past, that one :o

KC - what sort of compost bin? If you look on the gardening thread in some areas people have trouble with rats, and so if it's one of the open bottomed one's it's safest to have wire mesh at least under it, and some people recommend it to be a set height up the sides too. Make sure the holes are small enough if you do need mesh.

Oh well then, I'll have to keep the stories I encounter when traversing t'Interweb. Some of them are as about as sharp as a frog eating a bowling ball... :D

    A starter for 10...
