Hey, starting a book club of your own sounds like a great idea. Couple of other ideas
You could invite your neighbours in for a curry and pint night or a cheese and wine if you want to be posth (perhaps have it as a housewarming or to raise some funds for the local charity?)
You could become a volunteer at your local National Trust group - they have local groups who go on trips together etc
Ramblers Assosciation? Not sure if you enjoy walking. A girl that I used to work with joined the local group to meet people - ended up meeting a quantum physicist and married him (oooo right up your street)
WI is so much more fun these days, they are all at the Freshers Fayres recruiting students. After all, knitting, cake making etc are the new drinking, dancing etc dont you know?

Now, I think that I need to take my own advice there! I am going to look up a local Tai Chi class.

Hurray! WI, Ramblers.. quantum physics ... yep! Not really the NT, but the RSPB yes .... this is great!
I, like many others, made assumptions about WI, but its nothing like my assumptions. My brothers OH is an active member of her local one, and has been for 15 years. They *do* do cake stalls etc. but have some good organised nights out etc.

Also, daft as it sounds, singles groups, supper clubs. We have a singles group that is not about dating, but about finding other people to go to things you enjoy and trying things you've never thought of.

I think I'll investigate the WI .... and the singles groups, there's one with a website (I haven't visited it yet, I take no responsibility https://www.thegroup.org.uk

    Okay, these are the alternatives:

    - book club I start myself
    - WI
    - Ramblers Association
    - gardening group
    - social club for over 45s
    - line dancing
    - other dancing.
    - meditation group
    - any sort of evening class
    - voluntary work (Cats Protection League HQ is 15mins away by bus!)
    - sessions at sports centre of some sort.

"I think you know that the 'don't want to go' is a symptom of the tiredness, and maybe a bit of worry about a new thing/ new people... but what have you got to lose? :)" from Squizz - its not the tiredness Squizz, its the worry about a new thing - a new social thing, actually. New things I do on my own are fine :o

Wow all that brainstorming and look what you ended up with. Fantastic. Dont forget Kittikins has asked you along to something in her home town too.
I am a shy person (although most people dont believe me) so I too find it difficult to do new things. Its that doing it for the first time that bothers me most. I went to my village WI to do a presentation for them with my work head on. They were a great bunch and invited me to join. Even though I have been once and did it easily with my uniform on, I still cant pluck up the courage to walk in there on my own. Silly I know but I just wanted to say I know exactly how hard it is.

Hi KC, I'm quite shy too, so get where you're coming from! My social life, such as it is, is only linked with DD's school, dance and other activities....I don't know what I'd do if I didn't have her!!
    :(

I can recommend the Cats Protection League place, DD and I went there last year and fell in love with every cat in the place :)

Thats exactly it, Cherisong - nobody would believe I find it difficult to do these things.... I hope you find it in you to go along to the WI soon - that uniform makes it so much easier, I really understand that.

Kittikins - your town festival has come and gone, hasn't it .... but lets find something to do soon, even another thing at Brighton .... I know what you mean about DD being your way in to things - at my old place, I'd see the mums walking past, and it was like having a child was a passport that meant you could talk to people :o I'm glad you've been to the CPL tho, I'll check it out ...

EDIT - I just applied for a Tesco cc, the one Martin recommends... didn't go for it in the end cos I couldn't apply for it without paying £30 or so for insurance. So I went to the next one, the Barclaycard Platinum ... and they turned down my online application! I'm debt and mortgage free, I have regular cc use .... okay, I only moved house six weeks ago .... but !!!!!!?

KC when I moved house last year tesco turned me down. I had no debt (oh how things have changed), a mortgage, earned more than I ever had and regular CC use. The lad on the phone said it was because I wasnt on the electoral role and he wasnt supposed to tell me that! Check that you are on there. Mind you that really annoyed me because some people dont want to be on an electoral role for whatever reason. I really think this country is becoming more like big brother than communist Russia ever was.

Morning campers! Well, the task for today is to set up candles and matches and candleholders in the kitchen, the living room, the bedroom and the office .... there was a power cut last night, just before 11pm - I had matches to hand, luckily, and with those I was able to find the candles, but didn't have any candleholders, so used a mug - which is fine, but now I've got wax stuck on food items..... fixable, but unnecessary. It won't take long.

    So today ....
    - do the power cut thing, as above.
    - go into town - KK! the laptop shop you recommended in B Hill also has a branch in HH!
    - 4 phone calls, including one to check the line dancing is actually *on* :rotfl: it does say its cancelled occasionally cos of other events.
    - get ready for the line dancing.
    - go to the line dancing!
    - do what I can to make the place ready for a friend travelling to get here.

Hooray for line dancing (or yeehaa! :D) - I really sympathise over finding it hard to do new social things, but it's usual worth it when you get there. I hope you really enjoy it!
