I had put the fennel in the list, but not on a *to dig up* list - better do that ...

    southerly facing border
    - tall plants for the back of it, middle layer, then smaller at the front.
    jerusalem artichoke
    fruit trees
fruit canes - raspberries - let the plants fall over a bit, then the birds can't find the berries!
rhubarb - don't pick it in the first year
    lavender
    fennel
    sunflowers
    courgettes
    cucumbers

Thanks Hypno - its not a close person like my brother in law, but still, we owe phone calls like that to our own humanity, if nothing else, do as you would be done by sort of thing.

Oh but I really don't want to do that house paperwork, its on the table - thats giving me much more grief, tbh  I must be mad.

Cup of tea. Definitely a cup of tea.

    I did, I did :j:j:j

Very pleased with what I managed yesterday:

    - the paperwork, i.e. the forms my conveyancer wanted. Got to the post office 20 minutes before it closed, and sent it special delivery, so it'll get there on Monday. I'm worried now (surprise surprise :o) about the work thats been on the house - some windows are Anglican, which have a FENSA certificate, but the ones from my local builder, who I thought was so trustworthy, and who's since disappeared, are not. What on earth do I do? Well, that'll be for next week, I guess.

    - into town - Millets, yes, and I got a microfleece in a really nice lilac colour, £10, and two vests in Primark that go with it, £6 total.

    - still managed to do 45 minutes in the garden, hacking down a few more brambles, and stuffing them in the bin. And I've started on a tidy up under the sink. It doesn't need much, because 80% of it is in sealed plastic boxes (cos of too many woodlice and spiders :) ) but I had to unpack it all anyway to confirm where the stopcock is, so might as well just check through it all.

    - did my phonecall. Very sad, but very necessary.

Today, preparation for the surveyor coming around - tidying up, really, nothing major. Its amazing how stuff gets everywhere if you're not absolutely keeping on top of it the whole time. And if I *can* get round to cleaning the patio furniture, it would be lovely to sit out for a bit :D:j

EDIT - anything to avoid work, but I must write this down before I forget - twice now, I've been looking about M&S (have you *seen* the prices in there  and I've seen a half price or 2forone offer - last time it was their lovely fruit chutny, and yesterday it was grapefruit marmalade - that worked out at 74p for 1lb, which is fine, and its really good quality. Must remember to check when I'm walking past. HH has an M&S foodshop too :D
