Thanks Fay. I just thought of something else that has a real bearing, actually. One (only one, admittedly) reason my own house isn't up to snuff is the arthritis in my hands - e.g. I'm not having so many potatoes these days, I'm using gluten free pasta instead, because I don't want to use the peeler. Arthritis is a long term thing, and it can only stay neutral or get worse, I don't see it getting better. In which case, small is beautiful.

I looked and prefer the smaller one myself but it's not me buying it.Perhaps neither of them is the house for you.
For me the bungalow is one level so greater for old age and arthritis, has elderly rather than young neighbours, easier to clean and maintain. It doesn't need modernising...just my thoughts

We crossposted about arthritis! Taxi, don't worry about swaying me really, I just want lots of different people's thoughts about this .... and there you are, mentioning arthritis just as I was (reluctantly) posting about it.

I mentioned arthritis as I suffer badly with it in my spine and when it's bad stairs are bad.If I was to move again it would be a bungalow.

Ouch. Thats awful - my auntie has bad arthritis, but she keeps gardening so it keeps getting worse. And my mum has it too - but they both still live in classic 3 bed semis. What I really want is a base I can go out from, not a nest I'm going to disappear into. Its sounding more and more like the little one, isn't it!

I'm not much use either - I like both! :rotfl:

    Questions...

How much will the renovations cost to modernise the larger one and what would that involve? Is it just decoration or does it need much more than this?

What is the walk from the larger one like to the station - is it safe at night? ) The small one lookes like the station is just along the road!

  • Well the bungalow has lots of advantages - why is the energy rating not really high then - confused? Garden would also be really easy to manage in wee house :)

I can't say much about arthritus - sorry - but hugs I know it can be really crippling. xx

Re tatties (shudders at the thought of a lack of potato in anyone's diet) do you eat much gnocchi? Those pesky little italian potato dumplings - ready in 3 mins - full of potatoey goodness and quick. Def no peeler required.

I only mention them as I bought a pile for my stores when away - they never last long as I love them - but kids aren't keen so I normally gorge myself on them when they are away.

Can you get an idea of running costs from neighbours/estate agents for both houses?

My friend had solar panels - she paid about £60 a year for her hot water.........and that was on an island in west of scotland not famous for being very warm........:)
Total debt 26/4/18 <£1925 we were getting there.
Total debt as of 28/4/19 £7867.38:eek:
    minus 112.06 = £7755.32:money:

the little one is an absolute steal, but it *is* little.

But you know what, it all depends on the house layout, as Fay was saying on her diary about the bad design of her house. It could be a complete tardis inside if it's designed well. As others have said, walk around to places that you would need to visit, shops, station etc etc and remember to visit at a few different times of day, ie is there a rush hour there in town? Kids kicking out of school time. Late evening etc.

Hi Taka! thanks for popping in .... The cost of renovations is a big point - I haven't been able to speak to the estate agent yet, but when we did the drive by yesterday, we couldn't see which one it was, so its not actually falling to pieces. If its "just" a new kitchen and bathroom, then thats fine.

The walk back to it late at night could be a real issue. Here, I walk along a similar street late at night if need be, because its so suburban, its really unlikely any nutters are going to be around - they're more likely to be in town. But that one, they're isolated but close in to the main park, Victoria Park, so they could indeed get nutters. What would certainly be okay, coming home from the train, is to get a bike, its a short enough distance to bike it. The odd taxi would be fine too.

The small one *is* just by the station, you're right, there's no security issues with placement there at all.

Just a note: I'm working at 12.30, and may suddenly disappear beforehand - I'm not uninterested, just earning a crust! I appreciate all of your posts! :j
