what is this cpap thingy? :o

The kit Rhys has on his face here :)

It's a machine which blows a steady stream of air (sometimes with extra oxygen added) to hold a baby's lungs open a little bit so it takes them less effort to breathe themselves. More info here.

I was wondering that too :o
Here I go again on my own....
  • This afternoon, Andrew managed to projectile poop in the incubator whilst I was changing him (ewwwwwwwwww). Must remember that he's already developed a twice-a-day poop routine, and try to do his cares before his 3pm evacuation! :rotfl:

And then I had skin-on-skin cuddles with him for the first time :j :j :j I was going to ask about it, but wasn't sure if he was stable enough / big enough / ready. Today's SC nurse did her dissertation on kangaroo care, so she suggested it before I even asked. And it was lovely, he fitted just perfectly against me and settled right down for a good hour's snooze, arm outstretched onto my boob. I'm a Mum :D

Yay! (For skin to skin cuddles, not projectile poo!)

This is how I described it when Rhys was on it:
Basically, it was explained to us as breathing is like blowing up a balloon (ie your lungs) from scratch each breath. Once you've blown a balloon up once and stretched it, then let the air out and blow it up again, it's easier to do. What CPAP does is blow constant pressure in to the lungs so that they never completely go down again and then it's easier for babies to blow them back up like the balloon on the second go.. Does that make sense? Basically it just helps them a bit so they don't have to put so much effort in and they don't get too tired so they can put their energies into getting better :)

Hiya, for anyone interested in reading more about sids, this is a particularly good article.

Kristal, you'll be pleased to know that you are already doing everything right ;)
and that a FF baby is 2x more likely to have sids than a BF baby.

The most risky thing seems to be maternal smoking, which is responsible for 1/3rd of all sids deaths per year.

I'll leave it there and let people read the article, cos I think it's a potentially quite challenging and controversial area and I don't want to ram any info down folks throats :)

I haven't read the article yet-but can anyone give a simple answer why bottle fed babies are more likely to have sids? (not after an arguement just interested :o )
