I figured that if we had nappy free time, we could just put down towels or something, but from what people have told him, it's the unplanned accidents like projectile vomitting out of the blue that will do the damage.

I am realistic and expect not to keep the house immaculate (not that it is at the moment!!), but we want to sell it in a couple of years so don't want to ruin the carpet completely. I suggested buying a cheap throw that we could chuck down and put in the wash whenever we needed to, but he thinks we need something more permanent as we won't bother with the throw and will get caught out. Not sure what to do. Don't want to say no, and get blamed if carpet gets ruined!!

Can't say it's ever occurred to me to put Rhys down on the just the carpet.. it doesn't feel soft enough for him to lie out on directly  Not sure which I'm more (sub-consciously!) concerned about - Rhys' skin or my carpet! :o:p

Thanks for your replies so far guys. All advice welcome.

Don't think we could get the carpet Scotchguarded - it's just too big an area.

I just feel that if we put down a rug, then it kind of becomes semi permanent whereas a throw we could quickly gather up and chuck behind the sofa is anyone comes.

I wouldn't necessarily put a young baby down on the carpet, although when they start crawling, I am sure it will be soft enough. It's more that if they are sitting in a bouncy chair or something and throw up, at least there would be something down to save the carpet from too much damage.

Off to have pizza for dinner now. Not really Sunday dinner food, but clearing out the freezer as I have been batch cooking for when baby arrives and am running out of room! Will lurk again later. xx

Oooops! Nice calm quiet house, read Ben his story and as I stood up tripped over his small tractor he'd been playing with and its trailer full of marbles. All hell let loose as I screamed and marbles went everywhere.

Fitzio, tbh, none of my kids have ever projectile vomited in the living room, they have done so when they were older and in bed, but day time you tend to spot it (and you get used to knowing exactly where to find a bucket of some sort).

If you go for a good quality carpet that will take a beating and can be cleaned by one of those rug doctor thingamajigs when it comes time to move then you will be fine. I would get a rug though. Our stair carpet is a type that can be bleached!! (I tried it) though it is manky because we have lamenite and so all the dirt gets deposited on it. Oh yeah and it's beige.

In 10mins I will have fruit scones fresh and hot from the oven, oh yeah!!

And googling seems to suggest a link between chewing and speech problems.

We occasionally have nappy free time which quite often coincides with massage time. I put her on the floor on her changing mat on one of those maternity pads as that would hopefully absorb any little accidents. We have one of those giant ikea type rugs covering the majority of the floor which isnt too expensive to replace later on when its been toddlerfied.
