I don't know about a movie representing my life (nothing yet equivalent to a Tibbs' autobiography - luckily for some and for me), but I have found many movies quite an inspiration or thought-provoking. It is nice to get an insight into someone else's viewpoint or presentation, and to learn from their perspective, whether it be cultural, political, or merely entertaining, but often enlightening all the same. When a movie makes you stop and pause for a moment or change your views, then this is the hallmark of a good movie for me.

totally agree, it is strange how certain parts of a movie can grab and hold your attention, or give you a warm feeling inside (and no, i hadnt wet myself :rotfl:)

I remember going to see The Butterfly Effect at the cinema with a lucky lady a few years ago. It certainly made me change the way I thought about things, safe to say I didnt see that girl again

the opera music scene in shawshank always get me and makes the hairs stand on end...

"I have no idea to this day what them two Italian ladies were singin' about. Truth is, I don't want to know. Some things are best left unsaid. I like to think they were singin' about something so beautiful it can't be expressed in words, and makes your heart ache because of it. I tell you, those voices soared. Higher and farther than anybody in a gray place dares to dream. It was like some beautiful bird flapped into our drab little cage and made these walls dissolve away... and for the briefest of moments -- every last man at Shawshank felt free"

I suppose then what I want to see in a movie is something far removed from my life - to enter the unknown, and for the thoughts and actions of the characters to resonate more so than the plot. Connection with character is necessary to engage my attention. Or, if for reasons that the type of character is so divergent then to show me some redeeming qualities, or character development/arc.
