Just glad i'm seeing psych tomorrow...i'm starting to actually feel insane :o

Recently found out that Seroxat can actually trigger bipolar disorder in people who have a family history of it. I only ever had trouble with depression before they put me on that at 16 - it completely explains how come I started rapid-cycling right after I was prescribed the stuff (when I had a nervous breakdown)! Anyone else been on it and had that happen?

  • Hi all,
I'm new to the forums and although I'm not new to bipolar, I'm new to actually knowing what is wrong with me.
I showed signs of Bipolar just before my 10th birthday, however Bipolar is rare in children and young teenagers so it wasn't until 11 years later I was diagnosed... in January this year.

What annoys me is... from the age of 14 until about 17, I was a right state. I was a suicidal mess and unable to cope with my own feelings and thoughts, which resulted in salf-harm.
My sister died when I was 16, and it was a real smack into reality and I started to get my life together.

I then got pregnant, and a few days before I gave birth (January 09), was diagnosed with Bipolar.
Now, I'm not perfect, and neither is my behaviour, but the signs, symptoms and every thing have settled down.

But now the diagnoses is there, I have social services hounding me left, right and centre.

It feels like I've now been labelled as this.. crazy person. It's just frustrating and upsetting at times.

Has anyone else had to deal with the same thing?

  • I've actually found social services very helpful, and not once judging in any way. Though I know that is probably just luck. why do you feel they are hounding you?
  • Hi Trialia,
I was on Seroxat too, sent me psychotic. Not good when you look at your 8 year old daughter and see her pregnant and spiders running about all over the walls.Venlafaxine is good, I'm currently on it (admittedly on a very high dose) but it gets rid of the really burning in hell days.

    Hi firestronaut,
I know what you mean about social services, and my advice would be to get a letter from your gp saying that you are compliant with your medication, and their constant badgering is actually making things worse. If you have a cpn who actually knows what they're doing, then they might be able to intervene on your behalf..bipolar is actually made worse by pregnancy.Something to do with hormones that cant be switched off.

I hope that might help a little.

Unfortunately, venlafaxine doesn't do that for me, either. I was on that for a while, and one day when my dose was a few hours late, I had a huge fight with my dad and put him in hospital for stitches (and he's bigger than me. I threw a coffee mug at him). I lost all control, and not only am I not used to that, it scares me because I know how bad my temper can be.

  • Hi,
I read this thread and I know noones posted for a week or so but I thought I'd ask

Is anyone here hypomanic rather than manic? Psychiatrist thinks im bipolar II if anything as I don't get the psychosis part and have never been hospitalised, I just wondered if anyone is hypomanic AND takes meds
