Wedding venue problems - want to cancel.

OP - you can find Trading Standards number by looking at your local council's website, ring up your local council and ask to be put through to Trading Standards.
Sorry you have having problems, I would also speak to the bank to see if they can assist as £5000 is a lot of money and is no way a deposit it sounds like payment in full.
I hope it works out. Like Chaos I insist on my couples having wedding insurance - no wedding insurance = no wedding co-ordination.0 -
Thanks all - spoken to trading standards and consumer direct who have helped me draft out a letter. Looks like we have a good case although the only problem being, I am not willing to compromise and will not get married there now. Having said that, they do think a judge will see reason with this. Too much negativity and bad feeling now.
Thanks again to everyone who replied.0 -

Oh good luck with it all Beks, please let us know how you get on!!
I don't think anyone would carry on with a booking if they had done the same to them.....if they can't get a booking form and deposit right, what chance have they got of having everything right on your big day?!
Of course they may, but that's not the point. They haven't exactly come across as caring and professional have they?

LOL!! You're not wrong there!! I just hope no one else gets taken in by this idiot. The venues reviews of the weddings which have taken place are so worrying - people have had their big days totally ruined by the arrogance and inability of this man. I just hope we can get away with our money and chose a venue that cares. When we do (trying to keep positive here!), I will get recommedations from people first before parting with money (oh and I will get wedding insurance first too!!)0

I'm sure it will all come good in the end!
Once you have your deposit back, add to those bad reviews so someone else doesn't get suckered in by them!
Fingers crossed you'll have your money back before you know itx

Just a quick update - been back to the venue AGAIN and finally spoken to the owner/manager.
Apparently he wasnt aware of our 'issue' - his wedding planner hasn't told him that we wished to cancel - great communication again.
He basically denied ever receiving my emails - said that they all go to his Blackberry and he replies straight away - I told him I had emailed the exact address where the original enquiry had gone (and had been answered within 5 mins). He basically said I cant have done - I told him I still had the emails on my computer - he then was quiet. He said he has had no phone calls, again I told him we had the phone bills and numerous letters had been left on his answer phone and mobile. He then told us he had sent out all our information as he remembered sending it, we asked how he had sent it if he didnt have our address as all the info had been lost... no answer to that. he said he couldnt do anything until he had it in writing, we gave him our letter and he said, I think it is time you left and ushered us out!!! He had an answer to everything but each time he came back with something, he implied we were lying but that really got my back up - how dare he?
I am not backing down on this one now, I am not usually a pushy person but I have been pushed to my limit and will not let this go. No way will I get married there now, we have been let down and I cannot trust them to deliver. Next time, will get peoples recommendations and I wont be convinced to go somewhere until I do the proper research. Am considering going to the press but also got to be aware of the fact that we will probably be ending up in small claims court. :mad:0 -
Awww honey, what a horrid individual he sounds!! What exactly did Trading Standards say? Just that you will have to go to court? Is there not somewhere that will act on your behalf, like a solicitor, but cheap/free who will deal with them for you? do Trading Standards get involved and speak to them aswell? Hopefully if you start threatening things, like trading standards, he will give you your money back!

Oh my god what a complete and utter !!!!!!!!
Obviously one of those gits who thinks he's got the gift of the gab, but is a lying squirmy toad, grrr!
What's next now then? Did he say if you can a refund? Are you going to have to go through small claims?
If I were you I'd send him a letter, by recorded delivery, and give him 14 days to give you your refund back or you will take it further.Tank fly boss walk jam nitty gritty...0 -

Trading standards asked for all the details and have basically said that what they do depends on the outcome (ie whether we get the money back). I think it will be a case of going to court next as he wasnt forthcoming when we saw him. From what consumer direct have said, they dont think we will need a solicitor if it goes to small claims as they reckon it would be better coming from us. I am not really sure what Trading Standards role will be, consumer direct said to get in touch once their seven days are up.0
