Hmm... I wonder who gets the money for the advertising on the MyFreecycle groups - which are not on Yahoo - they're all on Freecycle's own servers...?

Mind you, changing from the FREE service that Yahoo offers must have cost a bob or two...

..then there's all the court cases to defend the name and the logo...

We figured that he might be a bit short of cash, so we offered (and had pledged) enough to pay his airfare over here to come and talk to us. Nothing doing! <sigh>
Hi, I'm a Board Guide on the Old Style and the Consumer Rights boards which means I'm a volunteer to help the boards run smoothly and can move and merge posts there. Board guides are not moderators and don't read every post. If you spot an inappropriate or illegal post then please report it to forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com. It is not part of my role to deal with reportable posts. Any views are mine and are not the official line of MoneySavingExpert.

Yes that makes sense, Yahoo provide a free service, so they get to keep any revenue. But our mods and organisers are out of pocket. Do you think there is money to be made from the local council in grants. If so, guess this would have to be shared with the local recycling centres themselves, plus My Freecycle, and now Freagle and any others.
Business is already kicking up a fuss in my locale, they don't want stuff recycled, buy new and buy often is their mantra.

    I've been Money Tipped!
I have long wanted to join freecycle (I have stuff I'd happily give away) but found it complicated for a technophobe. In fact, the reason I looked on this board today was to tackle this technophobia and see what there was hee about joining freecyle.

The areas are also very small, I live very rurally and apply fairly equally to two equidistant towns isted (although I've just checked, prompted by this and seen I do apply more to one than the other so should join that one) and there are three others are all with in easy locality for giving to people or collecting things. If its not a city or suburb you live in I guess this impacts on large numbers of people. As I'm struggling to join one under one name, joining another on under another user name isn't popular with me!

Having looked at the page for the one that seems appropriate for me to join there are few members, I wonder how viable a group with a small membership is? (although joining would help I guess!)

I just checked freegle and there is not a local one.

    Hi lostinrates
I am a freegle group owner and I have always allowed members to join 4 groups this is enough mail from anyone/.
I would also say just use one name this would be prefered by all moderators.
I dont know if you are joining freecycle or freegle but I think this would apply.

How would you know that the messages were moderated messages ?as you have no access to find out whether the member posting is a moderated member or not?(unless you are the group mod)Not all members are moderated-only a proportion of them. Some people also delete their original posts. The main problem is crossposting though. Members often forget which groups they posted to and post a taken to all of their groups to "play safe".
There is also unfortunately the odd dodgy member who posts a taken to make out they offered something. If it says taken and their is no offered post be suspicious of the member not the mods! I did have to query this with a couple of my members-and the answer was they had posted the taken to the wrong group.

er, maybe the WHOLE group is moderated? Both my local group & neighbouring one have full moderation. On the cafe site (joint between the two) only new members are moderated though.

I applied to join both groups where I live, the freecycle one was a little painful to do because it's so very badly designed..They are all badly designed for this day and age.

The other group sent me an email from the incredibly arsey moderator telling me a long list of rules and regs including things like not to give things to people very far away...totally up herself she was in such a powerful position :rotfl:

I was also mad as hell that she intimated that I may be joining to gain stuff to sell and that wasn't allowed...and other things similar.

I relied teling her to stick it..I can give stuff away perfectly well without their help...I somehow thought it was a help network and a way to re-use items that could end up on a tip, it appears that my local one is more like Dad's Army with petty power structures and politics taking top priority.

When this woman got the email i sent telling her how i wasn't interested due to her attitude and email ...she replied that I "wasn't accepted" which I would expect from a 5 yr old child.

I hope you people get back to the good part of this idea and away from petty quarrels and power struggles.

Kazwookie I've sent you a PM about helping you get some training. Usually moderators train each other, there are many experience people who will be happy to help you. What has happened to you is exactly the sort of thing that worries the majority of moderators in the UK about the direction things are going in., It is disgraceful to leave you on a group without giving you any help or training!

Could you PM me too for Moderator Training, I am too new for Moderator Role.

Well Freecycle do not allow full moderation of groups unless they are having serious problems. Some mods/owners are a little on the controlling side and fully mod the group but they are not supposed to!
Fully modding a group just makes a lot of unecessary work for the mods-its daft!
When a member has set out a couple of posts correctly you take them off of moderation. If they start sending them out incorrectly or posting things which are not allowed then you put them back on moderation.
Some members prefer to be moderated but most prefer to go by the guidleines and be unmoderated. Id take this up with the mods and challenge it-the mod rule book does explain and this is available for all to see-members or not.
