Our local groups allow semi-crossposting, in that they're happy for you to offer a item on your most local group first and if no response after a couple of days then post it to the next local group.

One the problems with posting to many groups at the same time is that it can come across as spamming groups.
  • Freegive Means Free Stuff, Free Recycling and a Cleaner Environment. Have you tried it?

Freegive.co.uk is made up of groups with members across the world. Freegive connects people who are giving and getting stuff for free in their own towns. It's all about reuse and keeping good stuff out of landfills and, at the same time, helping someone in your community by gifting them the item you no longer need. Clear out your cupboards, attics, sheds and garages with minimal effort. Working or easily repairable goods, such as furniture, recycle toys, recycle car parts, recycle beds, recycle sofas anything that is taking up space can be passed on to someone else if you are upgrading your own. Best of all, it's completely free to join. Visit Freegive homepage at ( w w w.freegive.co.uk )

Simply post details of your unwanted item on your local group and then arrange for whoever wants it to come and collect it. Another benefit of using Freegive is that it encourages us to get rid of junk that we no longer need and promote community involvement in the process. By using Freegive, not only are you able to get rid of your item with the minimum of fuss; you will also be doing your part in stopping another reusable item ending up in a landfill and, at the same time, helping someone in your community by gifting them the item you no longer need. The only rule is that everything posted are free. Visit Freegive homepage at ( w w w.freegive.co.uk )

Re freegive, looked at all the groups within 100miles and they are all empty plus the site style/logos look very simular to freecycle

Hmmmm 3 members of freegive in my nearest town which is 12 miles away and the group has been running since Jan. On the other hand the Freegle version has over 20,000 members which cover the same area :rotfl:

I think I'll give it a miss thanks

And a quick search of the freegive groups shows the largest group with the most members is lambethfreegive which has managed to recruit 18 members (including any moderators and group owners) and has had 13 posts in the past 11 months.

Why not consider bringing the Freegive groups under the Freegle umbrella?

I too am an ex Freecycle group owner and moderator. I took the groups I ran out of the Freecycle network a few months ago, I got so !!!!!! off with the way they were treating not just myself but people that have really put themselves out on behalf of Freecycle. For instance, Edward Hibbert, the creator of the Freecycle plugin, the guy who has made it possible for so many Yahoo groups moderators to do the job so well, without that I am sure many would have stopped long ago. He even went over to Yahoo in America to discuss how to make things better for Freecycle on Yahoo, yet he got snubbed by TFN in doing this and treated badly in the UK moderating groups. When they did that, with other stuff going on at the time I just had enough. Taking the groups out of Freecycle was the best thing for them, I had so many emails of support it bought a tear to my eye, and we only lost about 20 members. I for one am really glad that this final exodus has happened and I would like to see Freegle rise to be an organisation recycling in the UK bigger than Freecycle is. Hopefully before too long they will have the facilities that Freecycle offered (like a message maker) and some of the other groups can join them to bolster the membership. I hope Deron is happy now, he an have all his MF groups & stick them where the sun dont shine :D

The Freegle groups are sorting out the messagemaker now I beleive with Eds help. I notice its now missing from Yahoo Freecycle as Freecycle.org made their own version which is on myfreecycle(don't join that one-join the yahoo groups). Still alot of people sitting on the fence but contrary to Derons report Freegle groups are run by local mods whereas myfreecycle sometimes isnt as they have booted the original mods and replaced them most likely with U.S counterparts. So Im sitting on the fence myself with a big box of springs!

  • it was moderated messages that were coming through as taken, in quite a few cases the offer post never even appeared at all, which was what alerted some members to the problem, how could something be taken if it was never offered on the list.

very good point though about the daily emails being slower than on the group itself.

How would you know that the messages were moderated messages ?as you have no access to find out whether the member posting is a moderated member or not?(unless you are the group mod)Not all members are moderated-only a proportion of them. Some people also delete their original posts. The main problem is crossposting though. Members often forget which groups they posted to and post a taken to all of their groups to "play safe".
There is also unfortunately the odd dodgy member who posts a taken to make out they offered something. If it says taken and their is no offered post be suspicious of the member not the mods! I did have to query this with a couple of my members-and the answer was they had posted the taken to the wrong group.

I quite like My Freecycle way of automatically deleting offered messages when a Taken message is posted. Saves muddle, and limiting to one group only means nowt.
Members can always use another name for a neighbouring group.
The weak link with Freagle will be how to discipline errant members, do they have a system set up.
