My local freecycle group is now part of freegle, although the name is LiverpoolRecycle.

As far as most of us are concerned there will be no difference?

Although I do like the idea that an offered post is deleted when there is a TAKEN, in an active group it is difficult to match up the offereds with the takens before contacting someone.
There will be no difference at all. The homepage and your links are obviously slightly different, but your moderators are the same, the guidelines are the same, and the core ethic of keeping things out of land fill is very much the same.

As for the offered/taken match up - that one's hard to do on Yahoo groups. It also tends to make groups look as though they are full of wanted posts because all the offers have disappeared.

If your group is opted in to use the Member's Plug-in, you can download it for yourself (if you wish). It not only makes it easier for you to match your own taken and wanted posts, but lets you see a handy list of your recent posts and much more.

Check with your group's moderators to find out. There's always a handy link to them on the group's home page.
Hi, I'm a Board Guide on the Old Style and the Consumer Rights boards which means I'm a volunteer to help the boards run smoothly and can move and merge posts there. Board guides are not moderators and don't read every post. If you spot an inappropriate or illegal post then please report it to forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com. It is not part of my role to deal with reportable posts. Any views are mine and are not the official line of MoneySavingExpert.

  • Hi. I am co owner of Preston freecycle which became Preston freegle last week. Our members seem quite happy with the change. Well I take the lack of complaints to mean happy!

Freecycle was mentioned in the mail on Sunday and it usually brings a smile to my face that the name is out there but it annoyed me today. Hopefully the word freegle will soon become as well known.

What is to stop Freagle mods or Freagle UK HQ from doing what Deron Beal has done.
Lucrative business I would have thought if you OWNED it or part of it.

Believe me - the thing we were asking for most was consultation and consensus.

Some freedom to get the job done in a local and individual way while still remaining under the "umbrella" of The Freecycle Network.

Nobody wanted to leave. We really tried to talk with Deron but he didn't even bother replying.

Actually - although he didn't reply he DID respond...

..by sacking everyone who was clamouring for change and putting discussion in every group over which he had any control under full moderated lock down.

Once it was clear that we would have to create "a place" for disenfranchised groups to run until things got sorted out - we got started on it. Got the bare bones done in four days!

This prompted a whole bunch more dismissals - so pretty much overnight more than a hundred groups decided they'd rather be in the "place" than stay with TFN.

That place became known as Freegle :-)

We are still very busy putting things in place but one thing is very clear... it will be run by an elected committee who will be accountable to members, not "some bloke" and his two best mates. Guidelines and procedures will not be changed without consultation - and as many as possible will be optional guides rather than rules carved in stone.

Now we're at 188 groups with over 180,000 embers.

    And rising!

Here in St Helens borough we are now freegle too. I like that we locally serve the community we live in.

Yes Squeaky thought you and others did well. And nice that it will be democratic. A bit like the Co-op perhaps.
Seamless change on one of my groups, and local I don't mind. Er,,wasn't Deron going to have local mods, if he could find any.
When I log on to my Freagle group, I see adverts on Yahoo, obviously bringing revenue to someone. I am the receiver of that advert, does Freagle get a cut.??
  • How would you know that the messages were moderated messages ?as you have no access to find out whether the member posting is a moderated member or not?(unless you are the group mod)Not all members are moderated-only a proportion of them.

Actually, any group member has access to this information.

Any logged in member of a Yahoo group can easily see whether a post has been moderated and the identity of the mod who approved it, by checking the source of the message. You don't need to be a mod on that group, or use the mod plugin.

And for reference - none of the Group Owners or Moderators make any money out of the advertising on the Yahoo Groups. Any money generated is for Yahoo themselves.
