We've had a notification that Freegle now have 86 groups and over 400,000 members.

Not bad considering its been less than 48 hours .....

I see someone is trying to setup as many groups as possible with variations of the Freegle name, some of the UK names ones have links pointing back to freecycle

    Bit pointless

It certainly is pointless. And if that is the best The Freecycle Network can come up with I don't think Freegle will have much to worry about.

You would think their time would be better spent trying to fix the UK Freecycle website, which appears to have vanished. Maybe there were not enough groups left on it?
My first reply was witty and intellectual but I lost it so you got this one instead :D

i ahvent read the whole thread so sorry if im not gettign th epoint here...

it seems to me that control of the groups being taken away form individual mods woudl be a good thing. there have been a few issues with my local mod this past year or two...things like offers being snapped up before they are ever posted or refusal to take long time members of moderation status...i know this has lost our group a few members and the reply i got re my still being moderated after 3+ years enquiry says that because of this stuff going on in the back ground now the owner is unable to keep up with his duties basically and i am being penalised by being moderated and posts being delayed in going up. now im looking elsewhere to find some where to offer various things i am clearing out and when my current offers are collected i will be leaving the group and wont join freegle if the owner/moderator is the same person.

It's just a takeover, happens all the time. Somebody else wants to be the boss. Perhaps justified in this case, but a huge lack of info which could have been supplied by Deron Beale himself via the local groups, explaining the situation.
If money is being made from the advertising on my local group site, then that money should be going to help fund my local group.

Cat, the vast majority of moderators do not behave that way. If your group moderator is trying to take the good stuff before anyone else then they are abusing their position and can be asked to stand down as a moderator. If you go to the my Freecycle site you will find guidlines there on how to report your moderator for brreaking the rules.

Speaking purely as a grass roots Freegle group moderator I can tell you straight that anyone behaving like that on the group I help run would not be a moderator for very long at all. If I thought the mods on neighbouring groups I'm a member of were doing it I'd report them straight away. Don't stand for it.

Moderators can see if one of their team is chasing the good stuff and do take action about it, so reporting the moderator is worthwhile and they can be disciplined.

That scenario(of the owner/moderator creaming off the best goods) was of course the original point being made in the other Freecycle thread currently running. Although that thread became a more general discussion on Freecycle.

Indeed the abuse could go further in that they, or accomplices, could be re-selling on EBAY/car boot.
