Anyone got any info on the Bristol group?
It seems to be still there and under the old system.

Were you ever in the cafe? I guess they may be talking in there.

  • Ive heard nothing re Bristol and I live quite close and Im a member so no "special notices". Its a big group of approx 30,000 so I guess they are "keeping their heads down" saying nothing and hoping to stay with Freecycle for the time being. That is also what I have been doing with my own group but the time will come I think when we will ALL move!
Part of the idea of Freegle is that it is not "owned"-we don't want to simply replace Deron with a U.K version(God forbid).
All us mods want tis go save stuff from landfill-we don't want all the rubbish politics that go with the Freecycle U.S. version.
Remember-Freegle groups are run by your mods who you know-MyFreecycle is run by Deron.
The new groups may well have different names but are "part of the Freegle network" this is what unites them.

Ok- I've been a lurker and part time poster on here for a number of years (but can't remember my username on my old account).

I'm a moderator for two of the ex-freecycle groups and apart from one member who had a lot of questions have only had positive feedback from our members.

On the Friday the move took place, most of the local Group Owners got together in an online conference and discussed if, how and when we were going to move. At around 4pm things started moving but as we were all volunteers with other commitments (i.e. Children, food etc) it was just the foundation plan being set out. At 6pm (ish) the new name of Freegle was announced. Between this time and 12:30am (for me - some other Group Owners/Moderators didn't actually go to bed by the look of things that night) we worked like dogs to get the groups moved over, the members informed, the files edited, the Cafes moved etc.

After pressing the button to move a neighbouring group myself I think my first post to the new group should have been :

Wanted: New pair of pants *My location*

Unfortunately the move of our groups co-incided with my first wedding anniversary and this didn't go down too well with my Wife (and still isn't)

I did a tally of groups that had moved yesterday and while its a bit sketchy its reasonable accurate. I counted over 270,000 members who have moved from Freecycle to Freegle. Checked this morning and there are a load more groups that have moved.

In our area we now have:

    RushdenHighamFreegle
    WellingboroughFreegle
    KetteringUKFreegle
    Northampton_East_Freegle
    NorthamptonSouthFreegle
    NorthamptonUKFreegle
NorthantsFreegleCafe (feel free to drop in and say HI !!!)
    NorthamptonWestFreegle
    Rothwell-DesboroughFreegle

This accounts for most of our area now.

On the downside there were a lot of members who used the MyFreecycle page to post their messages onto the group before the move. They are still there and still posting, probably unaware that this move has happened.

If you log on to MyFreecycle to post your message then you are not supporting your Freegle Group !

Your message will appear on the MyFreecycle Page and whoever is still subscribed to the MyFreecycle will get your message but a lot of members won't.

Northampton N&C is a prime example, we're getting around a 50/50 split between the old MyFreecycle (Freecycle) members and the new Freegle group. With a bit of luck the members will all move over to the Freegle group.

Thanks for reading - we've (the Moderators and Group Owners) haven't just done this on a whim. As said above, its been a long carefully considered decision with over 6000 mails posted between the moderators discussing the issues and potential move.

And for all the Northamptonshire GO and Mods - thanks for all sticking together and see most of you later for a

Ok - I must add - I don't speak for Freegle in any official capacity and any numbers I give are gleaned from a bit of research I've done myself but I've just done a tally of which groups appear to have joined Freegle and we now have 76 groups and over 343,000 members :D

Thanks to all the other Group Owners and Moderators (and Members !!!!) for supporting the move :D
  • any idea why f/c 'HQ' is pulling groups from yahoo?

any idea why f/c 'HQ' is pulling groups from yahoo?
Again, my own personal observations etc but .....

If the groups are run on Yahoo, Yahoo gets the advertising revenue from the members posting their wanteds and offers on there.

If the group is moved to the MyFreecycle site, any advertising revenue from there goes straight into the pockets of the people who own the site (i.e. Deron).

This is effectively what has been banded about but I don't know how true it is.

Also by having the group(s) on MyFreecycle rather than Yahoo, Deron has full control over who the moderators are, who gets to say what and what members are allowed to post. Moderators on MyFreecycle may not even be in the same country as the members posting ther offers on there.

At least by keeping it local and having the individual groups run by local members the groups can adapt to suit the local environment with no interference from the USA.
