Torby that's a great idea - I might try that next time I have trouble parking. I often just drive away and go somewhere else if I can't get parked.

I think thats very irresponsible of able bodied people. I don't understand why they do it to be fair. :(

Im getting to the end of my tether with disabled parking bays. I was born with my disability and as disabled do, struggle daily. I use a wheelchair for any walking distances more than a few steps. I also have a daughter and im pregnant :D

Me and my OH went to tescos the other day, and we sat and waited on a disabled space for 40 minutes before deciding to park on the double yellow lines beside the trolleys as our daughter was getting restless and I needed to use the loo (AGAIN!!!) We parked along side the trolleys so that they could still get the trolleys in and we werent causing an obstruction and stuck the badge up.

We entered the store and whilst I was in the loo the security approached my OH and told him he would have to move the car. When he said there was no disabled spaces he said that wasnt his fault and told us to move.

I came rolling out and said 'so you want me to go back to my car, get myself in and move my car to a normal space hoping no-one parks beside me and then get myself back out to then go shopping?' when he didnt reply I just left him standing. We went to the baby aisle for our daughters milk and nappies, and noticed the security guard coming towards us. He again told us we would have to move the car, to which I replied 'go and ask someone without a disabled badge to move! nearly all of them arnt showing one' he then kept pestering us around the store as we went and got teething gel and some other bits before heading to the tills, he followed us there and then followed us to the car.

I asked to speak to the manager to complain about his behaviour since the problem with disabled parking is the reason why I had to park there, but he 'wasnt available'. I got so peed off I just left. I could have parked further away in a normal space, but why should I when inconsiderate people are parking right at the front door??? I find it hard enough pushing myself round tescos on my chair never mind half way across an unstable carpark and the possibility of not being able to get back in because someone has parked beside me?

anyone having a lot of problems with parking bays?? Is there anything that can be done?!? I do sometimes use parent and baby parking, but they are sparse also. And unless I have the space to get into my chair, I dont really have any other option.

    grrr rant over

The real problem is those thoughtless people who use disabled bays. Most know there is no penalty for abusing the system. There was one .......... on this very forum claiming he had every right to use one as he had a broken leg and was only in the shop 15 minutes to buy a CD :rotfl:

  • Sorry to hear your frustrations, it does annoy me to, aswell as seeing people pulling into mother and baby and theres no baby to be seen!

I think because it is a store car park, it is classed as private land so the owners can do as they please (IE - Stop you from parking on double yellows even though you can park on them on highway land).

There is always going to be problems like this because of the selfishness of some people out there.

And that poster was within his or her rights so to do.

Why don't supermarkets and shopping centres actually sort out the problem?

Answer - because they cannot be bothered
  • My mother has had a blue badge for many years and I am hoping to get one one when (if?...no, be positive...when!) my DLA claim is approved (they are currently having a second look as the first time they gave me a list of grounds for refusal that showed they hadn't even opened my claims form...or so it appears!) I will get one too. We both have mobility difficulties (mum is also only partially sighted).
It is so annoying when we go to the supermarket and the disability parking bays are all occupied and you later see that the people using the bay have no right to use them. The bays are there for a reason! Neither my mother nor I would be able to use the supermarket if we had to cross the huge carpark.
Why can't the supermarket security staff do a regular check of the bays?

I'm fully able-bodied and I have every (legal) right to park in a disabled or parent and child parking bay. I don't do it though, as I see this as morally wrong.

Obviously there are a lot of people without morals.

I'm not sure what you expect the supermarkets to do though, as there isn't anything legal they can do to stop it...

This is the problem. People have no moral right to use them but there is no legal right why they cannot be used by anyone.

Supermarket staff could check the bays all day long and do noting about it

What's the point of them checking the bays? There is nothing they can do to stop anyone parking there.

The only option available to them is to ban them from the store, but they wont do that, as they would be sending their potential customers to their rivals...

    Agreed.

I don't believe that nothing can be done though
