Disabled Parking Rant!!!!!

Options
Im getting to the end of my tether with disabled parking bays. I was born with my disability and as disabled do, struggle daily. I use a wheelchair for any walking distances more than a few steps. I also have a daughter and im pregnant :D

Me and my OH went to tescos the other day, and we sat and waited on a disabled space for 40 minutes before deciding to park on the double yellow lines beside the trolleys as our daughter was getting restless and I needed to use the loo (AGAIN!!!) We parked along side the trolleys so that they could still get the trolleys in and we werent causing an obstruction and stuck the badge up.

We entered the store and whilst I was in the loo the security approached my OH and told him he would have to move the car. When he said there was no disabled spaces he said that wasnt his fault and told us to move.

I came rolling out and said 'so you want me to go back to my car, get myself in and move my car to a normal space hoping no-one parks beside me and then get myself back out to then go shopping?' when he didnt reply I just left him standing. We went to the baby aisle for our daughters milk and nappies, and noticed the security guard coming towards us. He again told us we would have to move the car, to which I replied 'go and ask someone without a disabled badge to move! nearly all of them arnt showing one' he then kept pestering us around the store as we went and got teething gel and some other bits before heading to the tills, he followed us there and then followed us to the car.

I asked to speak to the manager to complain about his behaviour since the problem with disabled parking is the reason why I had to park there, but he 'wasnt available'. I got so peed off I just left. I could have parked further away in a normal space, but why should I when inconsiderate people are parking right at the front door??? I find it hard enough pushing myself round tescos on my chair never mind half way across an unstable carpark and the possibility of not being able to get back in because someone has parked beside me?

anyone having a lot of problems with parking bays?? Is there anything that can be done?!? I do sometimes use parent and baby parking, but they are sparse also. And unless I have the space to get into my chair, I dont really have any other option.

grrr rant over
Yes im disabled....yes I can do things you cant....but you can do things I cant so were equal! :D

  • If I were you i would complain in writing to tescos boss terry lehay(?),ask him to explain the action of his security guard before you contact the local papers with the story.

Aww hugs to you.. thats the problem people that dont display and use the bays..

I've applied for (high mobility so i will get it) blue badge, i do have my tax disc with disabled written on it. but until my blue badge turns up, me and the oh won't park in a disabled bay.... why... frightened of being told off (fair enough) and because i am not allowed until i have my badge..

although i do shout at ppl in the baby and toddler bays with no kids and no child seats, 'Hey mister you forgot your child'

Good for you for having a go.. aren't you allowed to park on single and double lines with a blue badge?
Life is about give and take, if you can't give why should you take?

From reading on here and other forums designated spaces, be it "disabled" or parent and child, have no legal status. Neither form what I can gather do yellow lines. The foregoing refers to private car parks of course.
So I would make sure you park there the next time you shop at that store and if they tell/ask you to move, just say "no"

After all what will the security guard do?

    What about off-street car parking?

The parking concessions provided under the Blue Badge Scheme only apply to on-street parking. They do not apply in off-street car parks, such as supermarket or local authority car parks, or on the road systems at some airports. The conditions of use of off-street facilities are entirely down to the individual car park owner or operator to determine and these should be clearly displayed at the entrance. You should note that badge holders are not automatically exempt from charges in these car parks. If in doubt, ask an attendant.

    Blue Badge holders

Blue Badge holders can park for up to three hours on single or double yellow lines when there are no loading restrictions in place. The Blue Badge must be displayed and the clock must be set to the time of arrival.

check with your own council for where you can and cant.

i had to check because i am sure blue badges can park on yellow lines for a certain amount of time...

It's a problem everywhere. *sigh* if only some selfish people would park considerately, we'd all be able to get on with our lives.

When I go to get my fruit'n'veg on a Saturday, there's never a disabled space available; our only option is for DH to pull up sort of behind the normal parking space, get me + wheelchair out of the car, then drive forward into the space, and reverse the process when we've finished our shopping.

This is fine on a nice day (although we sometimes have to explain to an impatient person waiting to park what we're doing) but not so much fun when it's raining.

  • Grrrr i hate people parking in disabled spaces when they are just too lazy to walk further, it only takes 20 seconds out of someones time and then there is a space for someone who actually needs it

why not scribble the reg no of those cars that are not displaying "badges" and ask security to get the reg read out over the loud speaker system and asking them to come to CS...then verify if they are actually disabled?....

did you ever think that all the bays may have be "legitimately" full?
    I'm now a retired teacher... hooray ...:j

Those who can do, those who can't, come to me for lessons:cool:

I'm sure there are times that they are. But I have noticed on the aforementioned forays to get fruit'n'veg, the four disabled bays are very often occupied by six cars, all parked close together, as if they were in normal bays.:confused::confused:

  • does my head in too, my mate has hypermobility and needs a walking stick, she gets very sore walking short distances and she needs to lean on me. when we cant get into a disabled space, she goes through a lot of pain to get where were going
