Can't you just be pleased that your friend obviously thinks you have great taste in names? I think you're being over sensitive.

When I was exppecting ds 2 I had a girls and a boys name picked (before we knew he was a he!!) and then obviously we didn't need the girls name, but i still liked it and thought 'if we ever have a girl i'll use it'.........3 months later my best friend had a girl and they couldn't think of any other names other than 'my' girls name, so thats what she's called and I don't mind a single bit as I love them all to bits and the name really suits her-and hey i may never have a girl anyway!!!

Also on the subject of funny naming of children, I once workd with a girl who had a sister. Before her and her sister were born, their dad had 2 daughters with another woman-the girl i worked with and her sister have the same names as their dads other 2 daughters!!!! Either he really liked those 2 names or he has no imagination what so ever!!!!!!!

    No!!!

Have had a great chuckle about all the Lettice confusion.

Back to the original question, I do think you may be overreacting slightly, it reminded me of that episode in SATC where one of Charlottes old friends steals her future baby girls name. Lexi is a nice name and like someone said before, you must have similar tastes as friends.

I was laughing all evening about this thread. I like the name Lexi & DD has a friend with the name.

We have a friend called Smudge (nickname that we have always used - surname Smith), when they got their rescue dog they knew there was a dog called Smuge in the kennels so the names were taken off so they were not influenced either way....yep they chose Smudge! Still remember many years ago OH shouting in "Does Smudge have sugar in his coffee" & their then little boy saying "Smudge is a dog!"

I've gotta say, I think you're over-reacting a teeny bit. :o But I can kinda see why you might be feeling sensitive if you're still missing your cat.

I have a cat called Mia, and it now sounds strange if I hear people called it. But I chose it because I like the name, and obviously your friend likes the name Lexi! (As do I, it's on my list of future baby names!)

I think you should be flattered that your friend liked the name too! Although, it seems pretty funny to even link your friend's baby with your deceased cat! It seems as if you're looking at it like 'you're named after my dead cat' when actually, you both have the same name. It's not a huge deal I don't think.

I'd be annoyed though if someone stole my baby's name like some of the stories on this thread!

I can see where the OP is coming from; I'd be ever so slightly - dunno how to put it - taken aback if a friend called their child Penny, even seven years after my beloved dog passed away, because to me, that name will always evoke images of her.

But at the end of the day, it's just a name, and a nice name at that. I certainly wouldn't sever a friendship over it.

I was pregnant at the same time as one of DH's friends GF's. We were chatting about names one day and I said that if I had a girl then we had chosen Megan.
Tragically their baby died when she was 8 months pregnant. At the funeral I found out that they had called her .... Megan. I said to DH that even though they had used it as a middle name there was no way we could use the name. He agreed.
Since that he refused to discuss baby names until there was a baby to name.

  • I used to work with someone called Andrew who had a sister called Andrea! I suppose it saves going through all the names if you are forgetful - 'Andy, come here!' ( my step dad used to be bad at this and would even go through the cat's name before he got to mine at times!)

lexi is definitely becoming more common - there are lots of children now whose parents appear to have taken their inspiration from Amanda holden who has a daughter called lexi.

I think you are over-reacting. you should take it as a compliment and think that every time you hear her child's name you will have a happy memory of your lexi popping into your head. Is there a more fitting tribute?
