Need to get this off my chest

Right, this is probably going to make me sound crazy, but none of you guys know me in 'real life' so I figured that doesn't really matter.

This is one of those things were the more I think about it the more it's really annoying me, I probably won't end up doing anything about it but I just need to get it off my chest. I know it's petty but ARGH!!#

Right, few years ago, me and my best mate were discussing kids names we liked, no particular reason, none of us were expecting. I said I really liked this name, fast forward a couple of years, friends pregant, guess what she called the baby?? Yes, the name I told her I loved. I had gone off it by then (pretty chavvy now really :o) so although I was a bit peeved, I didn't really say anything to her.

Fast forward another couple of years, my friend is pregnant again. This time, she's calling her baby after my cat which died last year  It's peed me off more this time 'cos she knew how gutted I was when she died, I'm only 20 and she was my baby, I've no intentions of kids for a couple of years yet. She's due next month though and the thought of calling her baby that is really freaking me out

It isn't just coincidence either!

I know this is petty and totally a girl thing but I need to get it off my chest.

I want to say something, but I'm thinking that's probably a bad idea.

Am I totally pathetic?

  • I'd be honoured if someone named their baby after my darling kitty but then it's not really a suitable name for a child.

Is it possible that your pal chose the name for her first child without remembering that you liked it? Perhaps she didn't realise that you thought you'd "bagged" it first.

I daresay that by the time you have your own children, you'll have new, much less chavvy favourite name

    What was your cat called?

She might not have realised? Have you had a word with her about it (youn could suggest some alternative names!)?

Lettice. Might be OK for a little old lady but most normal people would think she was named after a salad vegetable. Actually, she was that thick, she could have been.

ETA: I see I have responded when the question was not directed at me at all. I'm obviosly just as thick as my cat was. Duh

Personally I suspect she liked the name your cat had & is going to use it for her baby, rather than naming the baby after your cat (if you see what I mean). Naming a baby is such an important thing that I can't imagine anyone "naming it after a cat".... I have 2 LO's & it was such an important decision in deciding what to call them.

If you do decide to say somehting I would go along the lines of "it is a lovely name & I will always remember our old cat xxxxxxx whenever I see your daughter". As a previous poster said she may not have even twigged.

you posted whilst I was typing!

now you have said the name I would probably get suggesting some others to her.....sorry if anyone likes it!
  • I God I just feel bad that she's going to call a baby Lettice. Really like lettuce the green stuff? Oh.
I'd pee myself if any of my friends gave their kids the same names as my cats.

I would do what jack says: "everytime I see little Lettice I'll think of my cat....Lettice".

I do understand why you're annoyed but I can't now get Baby Lettice out of my head.
  • Lettice is the name of Bitted and Twisted's cat not the OP Lexilex.

So you can stop PMSL now.....sorry!!! :-)

  • Sorry I cross posted! I am still giggling though.
